70,000 Attend Concert for Diana Amid Heightened Security

Princes William and Harry addressed a crowd of about 70,000 in Wembley Stadium, as well as an estimated 500 million television viewers from across the world, at the concert they organized to celebrate what would have been their mother’s 46th birthday.
Concert for Diana went on without a hitch after two failed car bombings and a thwarted attack at Glasglow airport Saturday raised the country’s security alert to critical.
Elton John began and ended the concert, and despite a request by the princes, did not perform his tribute to Diana, “Candle in the Wind,” which he sang at her funeral in 1997. The singer said after the funeral he would no longer perform the song.
After John’s performance, the princes appeared on stage to thank the performers and the crowd.
“For us, this has been the most perfect way of remembering her. And this is how she would have wanted to be remembered,” said Prince William.
The evening ended with a short montage of home movies of the princess as a young girl.
The concert included performances by Kanye West, Joss Stone, Fergie, Lily Allen, Sarah Brightman, Duran Duran, Rod Stewart, Josh Groban and Pharrell, among others.
