Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen: Fashion Experts?
In the other website I write for, ringsidereport.com, sometimes I get asked to predict the outcome of upcoming important world championship boxing fights. I had always thought I wasn’t bad at predicting fights, a talent that we should all nurture since our Junior High School years-who’s gonna win between fat and bully Emma and skinny and meek Lissy?-but nevertheless, I have a four fight losing streak when it comes to my predictions. We can all get it wrong sometime, can’t we? We aren’t Jesus or Nostradamus after all.
Well, remember the 80’s when Molly Ringwald, Phoebe Cates, Debbie Gibson and mall hopper Tiffany dictated teen girl’s fashions? I certainly do, because I went from being in love with strawberry head Ringwald, to having a crush on sugar head Cates-like me, an insulin injecting Diabetic-to dreaming of kissing orange head Tiffany after downing freezes at any mall. Today, we have many people who have substituted the stars I had wet fantasies about in the 1980’s, with AJ and Allison Michalka, Miley Serious..err, I mean, Cirus, Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, the Spears sisters, Raven Symone, Ryhanna and Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, among others, grazing the covers of Tiger Beat-reminder to Tiger Beat’s publishers:I STILL DREAM OF BEING ON YOUR COVER SOMEDAY, CHECK ME OUT ON MY EXTRA WORK AS A DEAD MINER IN EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS!!-Rolling Stone, People, 16, etc, etc.
These girls have had an impact on today’s teen fashion world, whether good or bad. Raven Symone, for example, has been known for her good fashion taste. But the Olsen twins? That’s debatable.
Let’s remember that a few years ago, a large national retail store-Wal-Mart, I think?-signed them up to carry their clothes line. But we have also seen them wearing questionable outfits, specially when photographed by National Enquirer, or Star or who knows which other of those “we think Americans are gullible” types of newspapers.
Well, we aren’t gullible just as I am not American. But really? Right now, I am hoping to see a papparatzi any minute from now across my house. That would mean I arrived. I am a rock star and I will be able to score with Tiffany, Ringwald-et al. And I am more important to Americans than apple pie. But the truth is once I get to that point, the only excusable moment for me to dress in my every day shorts and my 11 year old, “B” off, Larry Bird NBA jersey, is now that I am still poor. If I turn famous and get a lot of zillions like the Olsen twins do, people would expect me to wear Oscar De La Renta, or at the very least, if I’m partying and decide to cross dress just to keep the papparatzi shooting me, a Prada dress. Dennis Rodman and Alexis Arquette don’t worry, I’m far uglier than you are.
Mary Kate and Ashley have given us some “what the heck were you thinking about?” moments. But now, they are back on the saddle, selling fashion items through their website, mary-kateandashley.com. But here is the kicker: Tyhey do sell nice things. Look at the awe inspiring purses their website sells. Carrie Bradshaw would have probably bought the red lipstick, holed top one or the brown leathered one with the blue motiffs. Even as Carrie would be pushing into her-gosh, time does fly by!-50’s by now. By the way I should know time flies, because today I’m 35!! Happy Birthday to me!!
Then of course, they also sell those Mickey Mouse, large sunglasses that I still have not seen anyone wearing.
Their apparel line is nice but could be better. I love the softer color and red tops, but there are questionable calls too, like their drak top with white pearls-I like Dark and White together but you have to see that combo for yourself.
I love naughty women because they are much better than nice, angelic behaving ones. But when it comes to clothing, naughty may be a no go for me.
So what will it be, girls, naughty or nice?
And remember, don’t be afraidto get it wrong. I have been very wrong too, and lately, way too often at that.
