Mark Cuban and Brian De Palma At War Over Film ‘Redacted’
Director Brian De Palma is fighting mad at Dallas Mavericks owner and current Dancing With The Stars contestant, Mark Cuban. The film Redacted is about the rape of an Iraqi girl and the murder of her family by American Soldiers. DePalma believes Cuban has had the end of his film (photos of wounded soilders,) purposefully blurred.
During a Q&A moderated by Village Voice senior film critic J. Hoberman, De Palma told the audience: “‘Redacted’ is, in fact, redacted. The montage of photographs at the end, I had nothing to do with [obscuring the photos]. It’s because Mark Cuban, the man that financed this movie, was disturbed by [them].
Representatives for Magnolia Pictures (Cuban’s company,) deny the claim by DePalma saying because it is nearly impossibly to obtain releases for the pictures, it is an “untenable legal issue.”
I can see both sides to this. On the one hand, De Palma should be free to show the ugly side of war - we really get such a sanitized version because the White House (not just the Bush administration,) only allow so much to be documented. It’s also because of rules from the Pentagon, that I can imagine Cuban’s team is correct. We are not allowed to truly see the death toll on our own soldiers. In any event, Cuban gave $5 million dollars to De Palma to have the film made in high definition for Cuban’s company HDNet.
