Who is Adriana Lima?
Adriana Lima is a 26-year-old Brazillian supermodel best know for her work with Victoria’s Secret and Maybelline. But who is the girl beneath the angel wings?
Lima was born in the northeastern coastal town of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil on June 12, 1981 and is an only child. She is reported saying she is of African, Indian and Swiss descent; however, her Maybelline biography states that her heritage is French, Portuguese, Native American and Caribbean. Whatever her ethnicity, it works for her!
When Lima was a baby, her father walked out on her and her mother. She has since been distanced from him. However, she has been recently making attempts to reconcile with her estranged father.
Lima was discovered in a shopping mall when she was 13 years old. When she was 15, she won first place in the Brazil’s Ford Supermodel of the World Search. At age 18 she moved to New York City and signed with Elite Model Management. Since then, she has worked with Vogue, Marie Claire, Vera Wang, Christian Lacroix, Emanuel Ungaro, Giorgio Armani, Fendi, Ralph Lauren, Valentino, GUESS?, Victoria’s Secret, and Maybelline.
In 2001, Lima starred in BMW short film, The Follow alongside actors Clive Owen, Forest Whitaker and Mickey Rourke.
Lima is probably best known for her work with Victoria’s Secret. She first graced the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 1999 and has appeared in subsequent shows ever since. Her most memorable work was appearing alongside Bob Dylan in a VS ad in 2003. She is currently a contract ‘Angel’ and spokesperson for the brand.
Lima has admitted that she was shy around boys when she was younger and did not kiss a boy until she was 17. Adriana told GQ in 2006 that she was still a virgin. “Sex is for after marriage,” she says. “They have to respect that this is my choice. If there’s no respect, that means they don’t want me.” GQ named her “The World’s Most Voluptuous Virgin”.
Despite reports, Lima denied ever being engaged to rocker Lenny Kravitz and said that she and Kravitz are just friends. She has also been romantically linked to other celebrities in the past, including Prince Wenzeslaus of Liechtenstein and New York Yankee Derek Jeter.
At present, Lima is reportedly dating NBA Minnesota Timberwolves player, Serbian Marko Jarić.
As of 2007, she is the world’s fourth highest paid supermodel.
