Georgia Hiker Meredith Emerson’s Body Found
This one hits close to home, as I am a 24-year-old single North Georgian myself.
Meredith Emerson, a 24-year-old woman from Buford, GA, went hiking with her dog near Blood Mountain and was reported missing on New Year’s Day.
Meredith Emerson went hiking with her black Labrador retriever, Ella, in Vogel State Park located at the base of Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest. Her vehicle was found abandoned and a water bottle and dog collar belonging to Emerson were located. Police state that she was seen talking to a 60 year old man.
After a week-long search and continuous coverage on the national news, the search has come to a sad ending. It was reported Monday that Emerson’s body was found, and today’s autopsy revealed further horrific results.
Meredith Emerson was bludgeoned to death and then decapitated, an autopsy released Tuesday revealed.
Dr. Kris Sperry, chief medical examiner for the state of Georgia, said Emerson died from “blunt force trauma to the head,” after which she was decapitated, according to a statement released by the GBI.
Emerson’s body was found at about 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Dawson forest. She’d been missing since New Year’s Day. Gary Michael Hilton, 61, remains in custody after being charged with kidnapping and bodily injury, both felonies.
Gary Michael Hilton is also a suspect in a similar case.
That poor girl was probably just being nice to what she thought was an elderly gentleman and wound up paying the ultimate price.
She was a lovely young lady and that was an awful thing that happened to her. My heart, as well as my thoughts and prayers, go out to the family and friends of Meredith Emerson. I sincerely hope Gary Michael Hilton or whoever the horrible, awful person who did this to her will be brought to justice.

This is just so sad. I myself am also 24 years old, living in South Africa. I thought that things like this only happen here – not in the US so much at least.
Scary to know that the vicious killers aren’t bound by country, or state. They just claim live wherever they want, whenever.
To all young and old girls out there:
Better to appear rude and unfriendly than to be nice and dead!
Stay away from men in solitary places and – never, never- leave for a walk without your cell phone and pepper spray. You never know when you might need them.
Take care you all!
It is sickening. And to think that this country has a movement to abolish the death penalty. A woman can’t even go to a park with her dog in safety. This could have been very different. Her killer could have been a real man , a friend, looking out for her and her safety. A protector from others. That is what men should be to women.
I am sorry I wasn’t there on the trail and I missed her. But moreover, I am sorry I missed him.
The more I think of how cruel and evil this man is and what he did the angrier I I become. I am saddened that this young girl lost her life at the ends of a sick and merciless human being. Where is Harry Callahan when you need him?
The pain i feel for this woman and her beloved dog ‘Ella” will never leave me. EVER. I can NOT believe that this man is ALIVE today! What the hell do you suppose he did with his own F-ing dog!? Let alone the woman he murdered. I am a die hard animal lover and am absolutely SICKENED but more SADDENED by what this poor animal and woman saw when they were with this F-ING MONSTER! LEARN to KICK IN THE MEN IN THE BALLS TIL THEY SQUEAL. These animals (dogs and woman) did NOT deserve this.
I agree with Lorean’s comments, there are evil people out there. To everyone, men and women, young and old, stay away from solitary places, always walk in groups and keep your distance, sorry. Yeah, yeah, hello and move on. That is the reality we live these days! I am angry that Meredith fell victim of such a animal, because someone who is able to committ such a barbaric act can not be considered a human being. I just hope justice is served in jail.
