House of Dereon Markets To Little Kids…What Were They Thinking?
I know this isn’t really about celebrity gossip, but it makes you wonder. The House Of Dereon has started a new venture…making girls look like hookers. I think that parents have enough to worry about with their little girls that they don’t need to worry about their kids wearing high heels and make up. Kids need to be kids and they aren’t getting a chance to do this. Beyonce and mom, Tina, …I give this ad campaign a thumbs down. As a Mom myself, I would never let my little girl look this.

The premature sexualizing of little girls is a dangerous thing. Little girls are little for such a short time. Their innocence should be protected. To put them in clothes that make them look like miniature ‘pimps and hos’ is to hold those children out as meat for predation. There will be no developing of the mind here through books in this mode, no exploring studying bugs and butterflies. They are to be strutting around (not even in the occasional game of dress-up) like manic narcissistic little clones of Kimora Lee Simmons? Whose needs are being served here? Not the little girls.
Due to hormone disruptors in our environment little girls reach puberty earlier than ever. Their bodies are ready before their minds are, and they have not had the protected time and space to be children. The Victorians had a lot of weird ideas, but one thing they did better than our current society is they protected girls as best they could from early sexualization and predation. When a little girl dresses like this and then finds herself groomed, lured, and molested/abused by an older man in the family or family acquaintance, the trauma and fall-out for her will be with her for the rest of her life; and the women who dressed her up like a strumpet and threw her to the wolves will be just as guilty.
Children want to please. They need to. Pleasing the adults in their life gives the reflected validation ‘that they are ok to exist’. Their continued safe existence also depends on this. So, why don’t adults make it a little easier on little girls – and just let them be little girls. There is time enough to be a woman. A child who never got to be a child will be mourning and looking for their lost childhood all their lives.
