‘Brokeback Mountain’ To Become An Opera

The New York City Opera has commissioned an opera based on Annie Proulx’s 1997 short story ‘Brokeback Mountain’.  The 2005 Oscar-winning movie starred Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger.

The opera will premiere in 2013, and is being composed by Charles Wuorinen.

“Ever since encountering Annie Proulx’s extraordinary story I have wanted to make an opera on it, and it gives me great joy that Gerard Mortier and New York City Opera have given me the opportunity to do so,” Wuorinen said in a statement.

I think ‘Brokeback’ will make a fantastic opera.  It’s been one of my favorite stories ever since I first read it back in 1997.  I am very curious who they will get to star in this produdtion!
