It’s a bit late in the day, but I could not let the clock strike midnight without acknowledging that today is Johnny Depp‘s birthday! Born June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, KY, J.D. turns 45 today.

From his very first role in Nightmare on Elm Street to his most recent as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Johnny Depp is one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood today. He’s played an antique book dealer and an author; a drug dealer and a drug addict; a gypsy and an earl; a cop and a corrupt CIA agent; mental patients and doctors. Who else could rock the roles of Edward Scissorhands AND Willy Wonka with such aplomb? And he never stops working: he’s got no fewer than five movies in the works right now.

Johnny is known for being as humble as he is prolific: he eschews the Hollywood glitz for a quiet (but still glamorous) life in France with his longtime partner Vanessa Paradis and their two children, Lily Rose and John Christopher III, aka Jack. He keeps it in the family – his sister Christine is his manager. He’s generous too – he made a $2M donation to the hospital that treated his daughter in 2007, and is known to be a big tipper.
