Dr. Drew Is Sorry He Has Tom Cruise’s Number

Say what you will about Dr. Drew Pinsky, I actually like the guy. I used to tolerate Adam Carolla on LoveLine because I liked hearing Dr. Drew’s very good advice to people who clearly needed it. I always thought he did a pretty good job.

I also think Tom Cruise is a wackadoo, so when I heard that the good doctor had provided some analysis on Tommy in a Playboy interview, I sat up and paid some attention.

In the Playboy interview, Dr. Drew says, “A lot of people in the public eye who behave strangely have mental illness we can learn from, and much of it is based on childhood trauma, without a doubt,” says Pinsky. “Take a guy like Tom Cruise. Why would somebody be drawn into a cultish kind of environment like Scientology? To me, that’s a function of a very deep emptiness and suggests serious neglect in childhood – maybe some abuse, but mostly neglect.”

Well…. no one accuses Tom Cruise of being mentally ill without paying for it somehow, so in come the lawyers!

Tom Cruise’s lawyer, Bert Fields had this to say, “I don’t know what kind of a doctor this guy is, but this posturing flake pretends to diagnose people he’s never met and suggests all Scientologists are mentally ill,” Fields tells PEOPLE. “This should tell you something about the quality of his opinions. They’re ridiculous…. The last time we heard garbage like this was from Joseph Goebbels.”

For those of you who don’t know, Goebbels was Adolf Hitler’s minister of propaganda – yes, a Nazi. No, you got that right: Tom Cruise’s people have compared Dr. Drew, who is Jewish, to a Nazi.

Although Drew could have chosen to go off on Tom and his bulldog, instead he showed who has more class, and apologized. His rep told Us Magazine:

“Although Mr. Field’s intent is clearly to slander and discredit Dr. Drew, under no circumstances is Dr. Drew making a blanket diagnosis about Scientology nor Mr. Cruise whom he does not know. Dr. Drew was simply using Mr. Cruise as an example of someone who is recognizable to help the public understand. Again, Dr. Drew meant him no harm.”

Well. He might have meant no harm, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t possibly RIGHT. Why is Tom so mad? Did someone hit a little too close to home??

I felt exactly the same way listening to Loveline…I waited patiently (for the most part!) for Adam to get finished being his usual insensitive self to hear what Dr. Drew had to say!
