Zooey Deschanel Covers BlackBook June 2008

The always-lovely Zooey Deschanel is featured on the cover of this month’s BlackBook Magazine. She talks about her first blockbuster movie – she stars in M. Night Shyamalan‘s The Happening, opening today – her singing career, and what makes her Hollywood’s “alternative darling” du jour.
On the real M. Night:
Hes not at all mysterious. Hes gregarious and funthe life of the party!
On working with costar Mark Wahlberg:
Marks a very natural actor, and very giving. Hes really smart and clear about his choices.
On mixing it up with her projects:
I love doing one thing and then the other because they each provide a break. It is nice to have variety.
On her musical career:
Its a personal thing to write music. I had stage fright about my own stuff, and when you are generating the work, it is all you….People who have the most courage are actually the people with the most fear. One way of getting control of the fear is to face it head on. The transition into music was a little frightening for me, but its more exciting [than acting] because its scarier.
On marching to the beat of her own drum:
For whatever reason, when I am faced with what everyone is peddling, I have the strongest desire to book it in the opposite direction.

Her father is the great cinematographer Caleb Deshcanel. It could be said, he painted with light.
