Is Guillermo del Toro the New Peter Jackson?

Jackson and Del Toro

This weekend we will have the new film Hellboy II: The Golden Army bestowed upon us.  The incredibly imaginative director of the film, Guillermo del Toro, has been pleasing U.S. audiences since the 90s, and he’s becoming much more of a household name. Here’s a little history behind one of Hollywood’s newest historic directors:

He spent nearly 10 years as a make-up supervisor before becoming an award-winning director.

Mimic (1997) was his the first of his popular U.S. films.

In 2002 he took the Blade franchise to a whole new level with Blade II.

Hellboy (2004) was his next Hollywood feat. A fantastic film full of creativity and color unlike any other comic book movie to date.

Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) showed his incredible writing and directing skills. Critics called it “an adult fairy tale”, “breathtaking”, “a home run”, and even “his masterpiece”.

Here we are in 2008 just days away from his next fine work,  Hellboy II: The Golden Army, a film that is sure to be entertaining, and a solid addition to his growing list of great films.

His fantastic vision will next be seen in the upcoming 2010 (that’s twenty-ten) Marvel Comics movie Doctor Strange. Created by Stan Lee.

And even further ahead, the pieces that will fit him into Hollywood history forever: The Hobbit parts one and two, to be released in 2011 and 2012. In case you didn’t follow the story Peter Jackson had some major legal problems with the previous Tolkien universe films, (maybe you’ve heard of them), finally landing him as a producer of the upcoming prequels. Del Toro is the perfect choice as far as replacements go. His visual style and incredible imagination seem to be a great match for the first story set in Middle Earth. But who will be The Hobbit? Well rumors have been flying, but the names that Del Toro actually mentioned in an interview are James McAvoyDaniel Radcliffe, and Jack Black. There is no confirmation as to who it will be, yet that information is not too far off. Del Toro stated in the June interview, “We will try to give that casting news at Christmas as a gift.” Gotta love Christmas!
