Who’s the Bigger American Pop Tragedy?

In the left corner, Lauryn Hill, the beleaguered ex-Fugees front woman who first burst onto the scene as little Rita Louise Watson in 1993’s Sister Act II: Back in the Habit saw a quick rise to Grammy darling just five years later with her uber-platinum smash The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

A decade and a Rohan Marley brainwashing later, Hill has fallen into absolute obscurity.

In 2003, Hill shocked a Vatican crowd of over 7,000 by making claims against Catholics saying:

I am sorry if I am about to offend some of you. I did not accept my invitation to celebrate with you the birth of Christ. Instead I ask you why you are not in mourning for him in this place? I want to ask you, what have you got to say about the lives you have broken? What about the families who were expecting God and instead were cheated by The Devil? Who feels sorry for them, the men, women and children damaged psychologically, emotionally and mentally by the sexual perversions and abuse carried out by the people they believed in? Holy God is a witness to the corruption of your leadership, of the exploitation and abuses which are the minimum that can be said for the clergy. There is no acceptable excuse to defend the church.

Yeah.  Crazy cat lady at the local CVS talk.

The group reunited in 2005, seeing the release of 2005’s “Take It Easy”, a single that gained less than a month of radio relevancy.  Soon after, the group split, with group member Pras speaking out against Hill claiming her “undiagnosed bi-polarism” was making it impossible for the group to ever, ever reunite.

Truly sad to say, this is one of our talents who’s lost forever.

In the RIGHT corner, and well- is there really a need to recap the Britney Spears saga?  Regardless, through the head-shaving, umbrella-wielding, Miss Spears has maintained chart and club success with three hits from her latest release Blackout.  It won’t take much at all to restore this brat’s relevancy in pop music.

Clearly my vote is for Lauryn Hill.  Thoughts?

Lauren Hill’s reply is a bit “ranty” and sounds somewhat looney - yes; but she’s talking about a very real tragedy that happened under the Catholic churches’ leadership. When she wrote the response I believe they were still refusing to meet with or apologize to sexual abuse victims. Nutty or not, someone needed to stand up to them.
