‘The Dark Knight’ Biggest Opening Ever?
Many predictions are flowing for the new Christian Bale, Heath Ledger super release from director Christopher Nolan. The Dark Knight has a huge buzz as early ticket sales are hitting record numbers. More than 4,300 theaters will be showing the film. Many theaters were set to do midnight shows have, based on demand, added shows throughout the night all the way into the morning (6am show anyone?). Warner Brothers Studios is predicting the film will make $90-100 million over the holiday weekend. Iron Man was the first big movie of the summer, and it did a solid $98.6 million. Nikki Finke’s sources predict $130 million. If indeed it does make that much it would take the third spot in the biggest weekend openings of all time, trailing Spider-Man 3 at $151 million and, Pirates 2 at $135.6 million.
But could it possibly take the number one spot as the biggest opening weekend ever? The untimely death of Heath Ledger is definitely bringing in many who might not have been as excited to see it. It was his last film and there is already oscar buzz for his portrayal of the Joker. A spokesman from Fandango.com told the Boston Herald:
“It is the fastest-selling movie in wide release for this year. It surpassed ticket sales for ‘Sex in the City,’ ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ in the same point in the films’ sale cycles,” he also said stated that “Dark Knight” accounts for 71 percent of all Fandango’s current ticket sales, “which is considerable figuring the movie hasn’t opened yet.”
So it definitely sounds like it might take the top slot. I know people who are taking the day off of work on friday so they can go! I’ll be there at midnight on the 17th. Can’t wait!

I think everyone and their mother is looking forward to the release of this one. Sadly Ledger’s death and his dark character in the film have built even more interest in seeing his last awe inspiring performance on the big screen.
I would love to hear get the figures on just the midnight showing! I bet it will account for close to 20% of the weekend take. Can’t wait to see this one. Might even take my Mother!
