Guy Ritchie Says Sugar Kills

Guy Ritchie is heading a new campaign that makes sugar the bad guy. Guy is claiming that sugar kills more often than crack cocaine.

“Sugar kills,” Guy [says]. “Think of the calories in sugar. Fat kills more people than anything else. Sugar is responsible for a lot of deaths, arguably more than crack cocaine”

I kinda agree with Guy on this one. Sugar is an addiction too, it’s just more socially acceptable that we are hooked on it.

Actually, sugar in moderation is a lot safer for you than saccharine, aspartame, and sucralose. It is safer than corn syrup which is linked to the rise in childhood obesity and diabetes.

Yes, that’s true too…aspartame is being linked with MS which is scary. But I think that Guy is talking about it in access. The people that are obese because they eat so much sugar.

I’ve heard about the MS/aspartame link too. Scary. Ditto attacking the optic nerve leading to blindness. Women for years would eat things like aspartame flavored puddings, jello, and drinks thinking this would keep them svelte. I never liked the stuff because it gave me violent headaches. (It’s affects can be like methadone poisoning). I remember picking up a medical journal somewhere years ago that advised it not be given to children because of dangers to the nervous system. It was also passed through FDA even though they knew of the brain tumors it could cause. Sweet. ;)

As for Guy’s new ‘mission’, I have to smirk a little at its histrionics. Kids are given cheap corn sweetener in excess in drinks and treats and this affects the body in a worse way than common sucrose. I agree with the French here. When they want something sweet they enjoy a fantastic real item that truly satisfies them. Here, we compromise with ‘low fat’ or ‘changed sweetener’ this and that and pay terrible prices. Low fat means more sugar and faster glucose absorption/insulin spiking leading to reduced insulin sensitivity and metabolic syndromes.

You know I went to Europe when I was younger and I gained 20 lbs at least. They are always eating and always having dessert. I’m not sure how they kept fit after all the eating I did there. I think like you said…sugar in moderation is a good thing…so why doesn’t he just say that?

Probably because this is an ill-conceived attempt to puff his image with a cause. ;) As for the French, they also walk a lot and if they have more one day they have less the next to balance out. A book you might find fun is ‘French Women Don’t Get Fat’. And if you can find it, a true comic gem is, ‘French Cats Don’t Get Fat’. In a nutshell, eat the real thing and enjoy it in moderation. One marvelous confection will give much more satisfaction than a mountain of ‘fat free’, phony sugar substitutes or Starbucks crap that will put you into insulin shock. You can even share a confection with a friend or love over tea/cappucino. Key is, make it a pleasure and you won’t feel deprived or obsessed.
