Johnny Depp is the Riddler in ‘Dark Knight’ Sequel?

Rumors of course are flying about what will transpire in the next Batman film. Check this one out from Hollyscoop.com

Johnny Depp is reportedly going to be a part of the next Batman installment playing the Riddler. And not only that, but execs want Philip Seymour Hoffman to play the Penguin.

I doubt the truth in the penguin rumor, because I distinctly remember Christopher Nolan saying that he was against the idea of using the Penguin in his Batman films, because of the character being too ‘far fetched’, but you never know. Depp as the Riddler on the other hand seems a more likely possibility, a good counterpart to Christian Bale’s Batman. But a bad guy as good as Heath Ledger’s Joker is going to be hard to match even for Johnny Depp. It’s far too early to tell right now, but there is obviously going to be a sequel. The Dark Knight has already made $462.2 million worldwide!

Nolan already has the subtle character thrown in there, Mr. Reese. If somehow he becomes Johnny Depp I will be more than disappointed. Throwing stars at a movie is less of a challenge than developing others.

I think the next Batman film should take on a whole new feel. The first film dealt with Bruce overcoming his fears, the second one was a city caught in the grip of a madman seeking to prove the point that everyone has a price for criminality and insanity. I think the next one should use for its primary villain the Mad Hatter, someone who targets the youth. It’s going to be awfully difficult to match the Dark Knight, so something really creepy should be the atmosphere for this next flick. Remember, we got a slight glimpse at Barabara Gordon, aka Batgirl, aka Oracle. The Mad Hatter could be the one who cripples her and turns her into Oracle. I don’t know, just a thought. But I think Johnny Depp was born to play a Batman rogue. If it’s the Riddler, why not. I just don’t think he should be the primary villain.

I hope to some higher force that he does him good. It would be such a let down if he doesn’t - or if this information is accurate.

I’ve heard of Anthony or Daniel perking at the idea of being Riddler, though I’d rather wish for someone else. Didn’t like Doctor Who, and I feel Anthony falls short of how Riddler is.

    Depp’s acting is Godly. ?

“Remember, we got a slight glimpse at Barabara Gordon, aka Batgirl, aka Oracle.”

Umm, no. There’s a difference between Barbara Gordon, Jim’s wife and Barbara Gordon, Jim’s niece. At this point in the continuity, Batgirl would be about 10 years old or so and not yet in Jim’s care.

Anyway, Riddler would be a good choice, and Depp would work well. I really hope for Harley to make an appearance, though that would be difficult without the Joker. I could see Sarah Michelle Gellar in the part.

Wow. Jesus Christ himself would come back to Earth just to watch Batman Begins 3 (or whatever they call it) if Johnny Depp plays the Riddler. That would be so incredible. They only thing I really hope is just a rumor is Angelina Jolie as Catwoman. I hated Catwoman from Batman Returns and from all the comic books. If they put Catwoman in the next movie Jesus might thing twice about coming back to Earth.

If you listen to the creative screenwriting magazine podcast from july 18th. Jonathan Nolan says there are no plans, as of yet, to do another movie. Also, if you loved the movie you should really give that episode a listen.

It is questionable as far as who Riddler should be - and for me Johnny has the ability to do him and give him justice [I hope]. He would be a lot better then Jim. He has the ability of functioning with each role that is given to him, and pulling them off.

Jim … did him wrong. Absolutely wrong.
    He made me want to kick infants, to be honest. ; ;

50/50 Chance that it doesn’t top TDK, but it’d still be nice.

Right now it seems hard to imagine The Dark Knight being topped. In fact, I don’t really think they should necessarily try to “top” it. It’d be nice for them to just go in another direction. I’m not sure what direction that could be though. I think with Nolan the Riddler character could be quite interesting. It’d be cool if they really went some sort of … psychological puzzle.

Ironically, I go the complete opposite way about this story. I think Angelina Jolie would easily conquer the Catwoman role because it hasn’t had a chance like this to actually be serious and freaky… two things she does quite well. She’s also the biggest female action hero I can think of, always has fight scenes in movies these days.

Johnny Depp on the other hand has done such quirky or bizarre roles that I feel hesitant about him for Riddler. I don’t think they’ll make his character funny and wild like the last time, they’ll probably try to make him serious like the other villains have been so far. The question is can Depp do something new with the role and would he really be the best fit? His face almost seems TOO well known, if that makes sense.

Unlike Joker he can’t hide his popular looks under some makeup so we’d be reminded constantly that this is Johnny Depp and that might take away from the movie. You could argue Angelina would do the same but since Catwoman isn’t fully evil, it works better.

Depp would be be perfect. He could probably make it sinister and somehow scary. Someone else said David Tennant (Dr Who) could be doing it. It seems likely cos Nolan likes casting british actors for some reason and if you watch Tennant in Harry Potter 4 as Barty Crouch Jr you could see how he’d play it

Johnny Depp is the most diverse actor out there. He can pull anything off. I dont care man, woman, child… if you didnt find the PREFORMANCE of Jack Sparrow amazing.. than you’re kidding yourself.. I dont care if you didnt like the story. Secondly… Angelina Jolie as catwoman would destroy this series her face is on THE NEWS everyday! She’s more played out than cotton underwear. I personally wouldnt like to see catwoman or the penguin at all. Nolan should leave those characters buried under the dirt where the last movies left them.

Firstly, flobot, Jim Carrey did not mess up the Riddler, he just made him a bit more comedic. Secondly, Holden, how the hell can you say that Michelle Pffeifer messed up Catwoman? She was great. Anyway, now I have that off my chest, my feeling is that Mrs. Jolie - Pitt could do Catwoman very well given the chance & Johnny Depp as the Riddler…. no, I don’t think so. David Hyde Pierce, now there’s a good Riddler for you.

  31. August 10th, 2008 | 11:06 pm

It’s not possible for the Penguin to be shown. The Penguin doesn’t need to be abnormal anyways. He just really needs to look similar like a Penguin. Or maybe he can be sort of abnormal. He’s a rich business man abd then he has got some problems with his hands sohe’ll wear a glove. I’m starting to see visions on how Batman and the Penguin will meet. here it goes
    On a private arguement/meeting:

Cobblepot: You know what, Bruce? They won’t call me the Penguin for nothing *he takes off his gloves and starts showing his deformed fingers to Bruce Wayne*
Bruce Wayne : *Takes a look at “his” fingers for awhile then ………………………

  32. August 12th, 2008 | 9:37 am

i believe that johnny depp can pull off pretty much anything…so why not the riddler…the pictures above ( to me ) should prove it…they both have that smirky smile…and if you follow depp’s acting career(like me), you will know he is one of the most versatile actors out there…who cares if he is well known…so was Heath Ledger(r.i.p)…i do agree with weird bob, the film should try and go in a different direction because its going to be hard to top the dark knight!…i hope the riddler comes a long somewhere in the batman series of this generation…but i am sure catwoman will be around somewhere because of little clues that are given in the dark knight (listen and you might find some)!!

  33. August 23rd, 2008 | 12:36 pm

they cant make coleman reace the riddler and have johnny depp take over.
edward nygma is the riddler NOT coleman reace
the joker situation is sort of simular, in the end of the 1st batman film joker dies and joker is a different actor/charactor in dark knight.
everything is about to turn upside down in the next film but one thing they cant change is edward nygma to coleman reace as the riddler in the dark knight.

but comes to think batman films are starting again and its sort of different now.

I think the new batman film should include clayface. I know he seems to be far fetched but what is the true nature of this character? to desquise himself. That is pretty realistic. And he would be another character to fit the jokers message, any man could fall.

Johnny Depp is NOT playing the riddler these are rumors, anyone who believes this is an ignorant moron. Also that would be god awful, he’s a great actor but johnny depp as the riddler give me a break. Also Christopher Nolan has said there is no way he’ll have robin or the penguin in his series. And Two Face is not coming back in case you weren’t paying attention he dies in the dark knight! They even have the funeral service!

Also coleman reese has nothing to do with the riddler where does this shit come from?
The Riddler has and always will be Edward Nygma they will not change that, Scarecrow is still Johnathan Crane isn’t it, they may change things like the league of assassins to league of shadows or joker having face paint instead of falling in a vat of chemicals, but they aren’t going to change names. They may make up people like Rachel Dawes but they will not change any of the names and they haven’t. ( Joker’s birth name was never mentioned in the comics as far as I know). Could you even picture Joshua Harto playing the riddler?

‘Jordan’ Posted - the joker situation is sort of simular, in the end of the 1st batman film joker dies and joker is a different actor/charactor in dark knight.

these are different worlds Christopher Nolan is making his own Batman Series this in no way connects to the other ones, this is the joker not a new one. That would be like saying Two-Face died already in Batman Forever and this is a new two face or something.

Michelle Pffeifer messed up Catwoman? You should be shot for saying that. If anything Hally Berry f*cked up catwoman.

Christopher Nolan has stated that he has no idea if he’ll even make a third movie and he said that he doesn’t rush into a project right after he has finished one.

and anjelina jolie as catwoman ….why do people just make things up

they will not do clayface or ragdoll or anyone like that because they aren’t popular enough especially to top the joker.

Catwoman, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Freeze and the Riddler are the only characters left that are popular enough for the big screen. Although they won’t do penguin, freeze or poison ivy because they are to flamboyant for The Nolan Series and catwoman just won’t work either especially to top the joker.

my guess is there will either be no movie or a very original riddler movie with a riddler we’ve never seen before, he is really the only character left in batman that is popular enough, and could be as mad and wild as the joker. some people think that riddler is too close to a joker and it wouldn’t work which i do agree on, so if they did do the riddler he would have to be so mind blowing that it wouldn’t matter

i recently did some mock up sketches of what depp would look like as the riddler.

my thoughts were that he would be a eccentric privet inspector working with Gothem PD. They would be trying to find out who batmans secret identity is i dont quite know how he would become the riddler but a line he would say is:

“hey, why the tie?” *gestures to depps green and black question mark tie*

    “…….i like riddles.”

he wouldn’t talk much and wouldnt have a silly staff thing
    AND

he wouldnt be the main villain there would have to be someone else dont know who though ;/

HUGE LAURIE “House” for Riddler. I love Depp, but he is in way too many movies and is starting to burn out. Besides, Depp is a bigger name than Bale and would take Batman out of the spot light.

We need Batman to shine, the story is about him. That’s why LAURIE would be amazing, he is smart and witty with a rough edge. Perfect for Nolan’s world.

Hey guys, I suggest a great idea: See how people would hate if Robin appears in the movie? (which I would hate too) We could then bring him to the big screen as the VILLAIN. He won’t wear any goggles, his body physionomy and voice will be totally different. Now, if we wanna see the JOKER again, we could do the following: Re-edit the deleted scenes of the Dark Knight, and have, i dunno, Gordon give the details using voice over, and then we see how the Joker was transferred to an asylum: don’t worry, we will see his face in the shadows, we’ll just see him scream, like Jim carrey in batman forever. And then, it will lead to the vengeance of the schyzophrenic HARLEY QUINN, played by Brittany Murphy. We just need the RIDDLER, and HARLEY QUINN, again I like HUGO WEAVING for the RIDDLER, Johnny Depp is too hollywood. So, I’d like to see ROBIN being a villain this time around. I mean, Christopher Nolan is a great director, and he was able to work it out when he recreated HAREY DENT’s role. I think he could also make robin as mean and violent.

Now, the story will be wrapped up in the life of Bruce Wayne. Whether or not we find out if people will get to know that he’s Batman, is not the case right now. But I think that it would be a great idea, if BATMAN dies in the third upcoming film. Why? One of the reasons is because this has never happened in any superhero movie where the protagonist dies. He will have no legacy, no successor, no Robin getting in the way, no nothing. It will shock worldwide audiences, and it will become a memorable ending in the history of cinema. Batman will be applauded, and fans will remember the work of NOLAN.

In order for Johnny to top Heath would be for him to die after filming. It’s sounds awfully negative when I say it this way, but Heath was incredible as the Joker. Seriously. But I find that other people are just hypotised into believing that Heath is some godly person. Heath Ledger is Heath Ledger. Half of his fans now wouldn’t exist if he was alive. That’s not to say he wasn’t incredible as the Joker or not a good actor, but a lot more people would have been critisizing him just like when Johnny Depp did the remake of Willy Wonka. If he died after that, his Willy Wonka would be unstoppable, but people are more critical like that.

    Pathos, people, pathos.

Heath’s Joker is controversial, because he looks nothing like the classic Joker. I swear to you, that he would also have had far more critiques if he was alive. It’s not Heath at all that I’m commenting, it’s the people. Oh yeah, I know what you’re thinking but I am a Heath Ledger/Dark Knight fan, yes I am. I’m just telling the truth. People just tend to be more open-minded when they have sympathy. Heath will be still the best villain ever. I’m just pissed off when people don’t let new characters in.

Johnny would complete me if he did the Joker, but now I sound like an obsessive JD fan, haha. I’m not, I just find him an intriguing person and perfect for a villainy role. He already did a serial killer in a musical, what’s not for him to move on to a high city action movie role? I would love to see him take the challenge.

The next movie (if there is one) should feature only the Penguin and nobody else. It’s too distracting when there are two or more villains in the same movie, and they compete for screen time. Focus in on a dark Penguin. Or, have only Catwoman. Or only the Riddler. But my first choice would be the Penguin.

Some people said that Jim’s performance as the Riddler in (Batman forever) was a big joke…but i really think that at the time the writers just tried to be loyal to the comic books! For those who read the comic books they understood the way Jim Carrey interpreted the Riddler! The Riddler’s personality is discribed
like psychopathic, crazy and badly funny! At the time Jim was the perfect actor to play this kind of role!!! For The Dark knight sequel i think the writters want
to show us a more realistic Batman sequel but keeping the loyal “world” of the comic books as possible.So..I think Johnny Depp should be great for this role!Just look what he done with Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the carabians”…Some source told that Johnny had inspired by other movie caracters like “Cpt. Hook ” and by the legendery lead signer Jim Morrison to interpreted Sparrow! Imagine what he could do with the Riddler!!! We’re gona have a darker crazyer Riddler with Johnny under the melon hat this time! …but close to the image of Heath Leadger’s Joker! The writers need to stay in the same “mood” for the third one!….and maybe the movie will be successfull as The Dark knight and maybe better! Hope Johnny Depp will take the role!

…like Heath Leadger Joker’s said in The dark knight:( This town deserve a better class of criminal…all you care is about the money…its not about the money
… this is my town now!) Thats why im telling that the next villains will be close to the Joker’s image! They’re crazyer all one to another!!!

there is no doubt that depp would be an outstanding Riddler… but i have to say that the person who could play the best riddler would have to be none other than……. HOUSE. thats right Hugh Laurie. now Depp is by far my favorite actor, but the riddler is also my favorite villain, dont ask my way… i dont know just do. But hugh laurie would be the perfect Riddler. Yes he is a bit older… but that can all be altered with makeup. come on if John Leguizamo could play bouth Luigi and the Violator… :-p i hope someone can back me on this… i mean i have picked out alot of comic book characters for movies… and most of them actually made it, Ryan Reynolds dead pool, i said that 5 years ago… lol Kelsey Grammar… i saw that one way before they made xmen 1 (and this is a perfect example of what makeup can do…) so thats right. Hugh Laurie as Riddler… think about it yes?

This is James Gilks (owner of SerialKillerCalendar.com) personally I would love it if they took the idea of the Riddler to a very dark extreme. His character is very close to real life serial killers like David Berkowitz (the son of sam) and the Zodiac Killer. Many serial killers (including Jack The Ripper and The Red Spider) have sent letters to the police and the Zodiac killer sent cryptograms (which where in essence a type of riddle). I think that if Hollywood is willing to take these films to the gritty dark side of real life, they should focus more on this angel and abandon the tacky jump suit wearing, cartoon aspect that Jim Carey brought to the screen. I would love to see a down right evil and twisted serial killer side to the Riddler.

I also believe that they are setting up The Mad Hatter for a future movie. If you watch carefully, Batman says that the man Dent is interrogating in The Dark Knight (the creepy smiling guy from the ambulance) is named “Jervis Tetch”. This is The Mad Hatter.

Lastly, I would love to see all these films come together in to a plot that involves Arkham Asylum. There have been many amazing graphic novels that focus on this (especially “A Serious Place on Serious Earth”). This would be a perfect opportunity for the writers to place Batman against not only a huge cast of badies but also against his own troubled mind.)

Well, thats just the opinion of someone who runs a company devoted to selling serial killer merchandise so you can take it or leave it. I hope you can all stop by SerialKillerCalendar.com to pick up some morbid merch (including the new Serial Killer Magazine, Serial Killer Trading Cards and Serial Killer Action Figures. I know, its a shameless display of self promotion but really, I have to justify reading up on Batman Movies while I am supposed to be working somehow.

    Oh holy bejezzus!
I would KILL to have Johnny as the Riddler!
But then again, anything would be better than Jim Carrey in Tim Burton’s Batman Forever.
I love the dark feel Nolan has wrapped around Batman, it seems like the way it should have been all along.

Heath Ledger played the joker very well. He might as well play the riddler. That would be cool.

Johnny Depp as the Riddler would work. The Riddler isn’t really as big a threat on the scale the Joker was but he can be added in believably some how. The thing that’s good about Depp is that he adds a size to a character. He takes whats weird and makes it larger than life, Fear and Loathing for example. Lets just hope that the part is written well and the character’s direction is right for the story line, other than that don’t worry about Depp. I disagree with Nolan’s no Penguin rule. When I saw Batman Begins I thought the Joker would be a sore thumb because I pictured the comic book incarnation and we all know how that turned out. Instead of the Penguin being weird looking, just make him essentric and a villain in Bruce Wayne’s business world instead of Batman’s costumed world. Stranger, more far fetched things have happened than a crocked businessman insisting on holding an umbrella. If well written Philip Seymour Hoffman could pull it off. Also Two Face has to come back in some way or another, just to keep a tie between stories. He doesn’t have the man power to be a threat but he still has to have some appearance in the next film. I’m hopping that Two Face and the Joker are stored deep in the heart of Arkham Asylum and that there’s some explanation of it in the next film.

Everyone keeps saying the riddler is not a “real” enough character to be played in the movie. It would be cool to see him as an extremely bipolar, schizophrenic, sociopathic character that is a genius. He could use his genius to manipulate society using very convincing lawyer like speech, playing on peoples emotions and desires, and he could even be a celebrity who uses his power to turn people against batman. And to make the movie a little edger his sexuality could be ambiguous much like his mental state.
Maybe poison ivy could be in it too and the movie can have a green or envy type theme to it.

Johnny Depp is no doubt one of my favorite actors. You give him any role, he’ll make it 10x better than
you expected. He would make an excellent riddler for the sequal. Jim wasn’t that bad, I personally thought he was good at the time, but just thinking of what Johnny Depp could do to this role. Woo, it gave me goosebumps, he’s going to be great.

well i think they should definitely include arkham asylum, and i think they should go dark with the riddler as well, cause think about it, dark knight was intense, for it to go back to hippy happy goofy would just kill it. although the last ideas for johnny depp movies like charlie and the chocolate factory, and alice and wonderland are all good ideas for johnny depp but he hasnt really sold any of them. he could pull this off i really think he could!! AND PLEASE NOT MEGAN FOX AS CATWOMEN UGH!! BTW GUYS ALL THE PEOPLE WHO BOUGHT BATMAN ARKHAM ASYLUM GO TO ARKHAMCARE.COM AND SEE IF YOU CAN INVESTIGATE LIKE THE BAT!! ILL GIVE YOU A STARTING HINT. BLACKGATE FIRES!!!!

    GOOD LUCK!!

While i dont think theyll likely revisit characters done before the current series. I would like to see patrick stewart as Mr. Freeze. The films tend to go for the more realistic approach then the tim burton films and the horridness that followed them, so the idea of the more comic book characters that wouldn’t really exist in real life probably wont be explored.

JOLE MCHALE (from the soup) SHOULD BE THE NEXT RIDDLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i believe that the riddler role should be played as someone creepy who could be close to outdoing the joker.someone who could really grasp the insanity side of the riddler, definatly not johnny depp. jim carry reallly made his part iun batman insane and a lil bit on the edge.also i believe that while batman deels with the new foe riddler and has his hands full. Quinn should be included and break out the joker while batman is chasing riddler. it would be an all out war if the riddler and joker joined forces. the city would plunge and everybody would need batmans help
