Project Runway Competition of Olympic Proportions
After Emily’s somewhat surprising departure last week from Project Runway, the contestants were faced with a rather patriotic challenge on Wednesday’s episode. Five-time medal winner Apolo Ohno greeted them at an indoor track and field facility to present them with their next task: to design an outfit for America’s female athletes to wear during the opening ceremonies in this year’s summer Olympic games in Bejing. Over the course of the show, several things were proven that I already knew. Suede constantly talking in third person is highly irritating. Stella’s obsession with all things black and Goth is very creepy. Blayne’s tanorexia is getting a little out of hand. And mentor Tim Gunn saying “Holla at cha boy” is freakin’ hilarious.
I always thought Korto was pretty hardcore but now we know why. She was born in the African country of Liberia, but had to flee with her family as a teenager during the civil war there. To her, America is a land of second chances, a place where she was made free from a certain future of torture and rape. Her love for America led her to design sleek, white high-waisted linen pants and a leather vest with red and blue trim. She won the challenge hands-down as the judges could really picture the USA’s athletes feeling proud and confident in her garment.
But as good as Korto’s was, there were some equally terrible. Daniel designed a 1940’s inspired purple satin cocktail dress, while Jennifer went with a gold and white knee-length skirt paired with a jeweled navy cardigan. (Remember, they were designing for the USA’s strongest female competitors). Both were deemed ridiculous, but Jennifer was sent packing due to her inability to break away from her own feminine taste in every challenge. Personally, I think they should have gone ahead and dumped them both.
