Nastia Liukin Wins All-Around Gold, Shawn Johnson Gets Screwed
The US Women’s Gymnastics Team walked away with another Silver and a Gold medal in the individual all-around competition. Apparently the international judges at the Beijing Olympics aren’t a fan of Shawn Johnson, and she got majorly screwed on her scores yet again. Shockingly (haha), the Chinese got much better scores than they deserved and the Americans-Johnson and Nastia Liukin- got the short end of the stick. Liukin performed an almost perfet vault, but her scores did not reflect that. And though Shawn Johnson didn’t quite rotate all the way around and took a small step, her vault score was unfair as well. Johnson got super-jacked on uneven bars where she was nearly perfect but received a crap score again. In the end, Nastia Liukin took home the all-around gold by just 0.600.
Exactly 20 years ago, her father and coach, Valeri Liukin, finished less than one-tenth of a point behind his Russian teammate Demitri Artemev in the individual all-around competition, the gold slipping from his neck as he swung his arms to balance himself after an imperfect landing from the high bar. Nastia is only the third American woman to win all-around gold. The others were Mary Lou Retten and Carly Patterson.
Johnson, the reigning World Champion, was always the favorite to win with Liukin predicted as the Silver medalist. They both did an amazing job, and at least they went 1-2 like they planned. Shawn Johnson did, however, get an audience shout-out from icon and former Gold-medalist Mary Lou Retten. That must’ve helped relieve some disappointment.

Shawn Johnson actually was gifted bigtime on her vault score. If Cheng Fei is only getting a 9.5+ B score for how she is doing the Amanar then Johnson should be barely getting a 9.1 since hers doesnt even compare. Her AA Amanar was lucky to not get downgraded. Her beam with a wobble, step on the landing, and the crap extension on her leaps was also overscored. Her bars and floor were about right. Yilin was overscored on beam. Still Johnson was lucky to even get silver. She is a very overrated gymnast normally and what happened in Beijing was she simply got the scores she deserved, well still too high at times, but closer to what she should get.
