Estelle Plummets On Charts: Record Label to Blame

The whole anti-iTunes thing might have worked for Kid Rock (who climbed the charts after fans found out they couldn’t buy their copy of “All Summer Long”, and instead turned to purchasing physical copies), but when Warner, Estelle’s record label, decided to try they shot themselves in the foot. The result? The Kanye West-assisted record “American Boy” dropped from #11 to #37 on the U.S. Billboard charts. Her album Shine was doing moderately well as the 38th best-selling album in the country. It’s now fallen into obscurity at #159.

A spokesperson for Warner issued this weak explanation: “The move was one of several uniquely tailored to each artist and their fanbase in an effort to optimize revenues and promote long-term artist development.”

So sad, especially in a music industry that’s so hard for new artists to break into (these days at least).
