‘Watchmen’ Delayed to 2010?
With the major lawsuit plaguing the release of the upcoming comic film Watchmen, It’s still scheduled for release on March 9th, 2009. But I’d like to point out the scheduled months on the trial…
The New York Times reports that Warners’ filing claims “Fox ’sat silently’ as one of the producers of Watchmen, Lawrence Gordon, took the project ‘to studio after studio with Fox’s express knowledge.’ Fox, which filed a lawsuit in February, has claimed in its own filings that Mr. Gordon did not keep the studio apprised of his plans, as required by a 1994 agreement. That deal granted Mr. Gordon rights to Watchmen in ‘turnaround’ — an industry term for arrangements under which producers can move a project from one studio to another under certain conditions.”
Warners claims that Gordon even offered the project back to Fox in 2005 but the studio “simply rejected it.”
To make matters more complicated, the Times suggests that the latest developments could open the door to both Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures getting roped into the lawsuit, since both studios tried developing Watchmen at various points in the project’s storied two decade-long journey to the silver screen.
Warners and Fox also have a conflict of dates on when the Watchmen trial could begin, with Warners preferring April and Fox wanting June. Either way, those are both after the film’s planned March 6, 2009 release date … provided Watchmen stills opens then.
This isn’t good news, and while there is a chance the film will open on it’s projected release you probably shouldn’t get your hopes up. This film has been in the works for so many years, one more year of delay doesn’t seem like a stretch.
