YouTube ‘Christian the Lion’ Gets Movie Deal

A new film will be produced based on the YouTube clip, Christian the Lion. Here is the clip if you haven’t seen it yet:

Millions have seen the YouTube video of “Christian the Lion” reuniting in Africa with the two men who bought him from a high-end London department store in 1969.

Now, Sony Pictures is looking to bring the story of Christian and the two men, John Rendall and Anthony “Ace” Bourke, to the big screen.

The studio is in the process of securing the life rights of Rendall and Bourke and their 1972 book “A Lion Called Christian.”

It’s a very cute clip, but is it really enough for a feature? Hollywood is desperate.

I think a movie about the lives of John and Ace before, during and after setting Christian free into the wild will be a smash hit. There is more than enough story there to make a movie about this. John and Ace’s lives before going to England, their meeting in England, what led up to buying Christian, their time with the lion, then going to the Travers country residence with the lion, their time in Africa, them leaving Africa, the first reunion, and finally the second reunion, and then Christian going back into the wild never to b seen again. WHAT A STORY!!!

That is so touching. It brought tears to my eyes. However, as magical as this is, it is not always the case. The woman who raised the cub in the classic ‘Born Free’ (which inspired a movie and gorgeous song) was later mauled to death by the same lion she’d hand raised. Cats are unpredictable, and while they are my favorite animals by far, even little cats can have a bad hair day and bite or scratch you. Difference is, you’ll live. Also think of Sigfried and Roy’s Roy. It just takes an instant. I think this would make a magical movie, although it concerns me that it will incite people purchasing such animals with naive expectations to potentially tragic results for humans and cats.
