Jordin Sparks Defends Promise Rings at VMA’s

Who knew America’s favorite plus sized model-turned singing competition winner had it in her? Before introducing T.I.‘s performance (alongside John Legend), Jordin Sparks spoke out against host Russell Brand‘s jokes about the Jonas Brothers‘ and their promise/chastity rings (which pledge a certain allegiance to vowing to wait until marriage for sex).

“I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It’s not bad to wear a promise ring,” Sparks, 18, told the crowd, off-the-cuff, “because not everybody – guy or girl – wants to be a slut.”

Burn!

The comedian returned to the stage later and offered an apology, soon-before launching into more sexually-themed antics. Love this dude!

“I didn’t meant to take it lightly,” the host said about his purity ring remarks. “I don’t want to piss off teenage fans.” Still, Brand, whose apology soon morphed into a series of off-color jokes, said, “Promise rings, I’m well up for it. [But] a bit of sex, it never hurt anybody.”

Thank God someone had the guts to say something. Russell Brand was outrageous. I might agree with some of his political beliefs, but the fact of the matter is that he’s a British man who came to America and insulted our politics, our leadership and our country as a whole.

And everything he said about the Jonas Brothers was completely uncalled for. They are promoting good ideals and morals and while everyone expected a short jab about their purity rings, the extent to which Russell Brand mocked them was unnecessary and in horrible taste.
