Jordin Sparks Defends Promise Rings at VMA’s

Who knew America’s favorite plus sized model-turned singing competition winner had it in her? Before introducing T.I.’s performance (alongside John Legend), Jordin Sparks spoke out against host Russell Brand’s jokes about the Jonas Brothers‘ and their promise/chastity rings (which pledge a certain allegiance to vowing to wait until marriage for sex).

“I just have one thing to say about promise rings. It’s not bad to wear a promise ring,” Sparks, 18, told the crowd, off-the-cuff, “because not everybody – guy or girl – wants to be a slut.”

Burn!

The comedian returned to the stage later and offered an apology, soon-before launching into more sexually-themed antics. Love this dude!

“I didn’t meant to take it lightly,” the host said about his purity ring remarks. “I don’t want to piss off teenage fans.” Still, Brand, whose apology soon morphed into a series of off-color jokes, said, “Promise rings, I’m well up for it. [But] a bit of sex, it never hurt anybody.”

95 % of Americans have sex before they are married. Jordin Sparks, who is ironically receiving praise for her video full of “heat” and “passion” with Chris Brown, effectively insulted all of these millions of people. Having sex before one is married does not make one a “slut,” it makes one “human.” “Sluts” are defined by right wing bigots who are terrified of sexuality. It is the height of hubris for an individual who is not even 20 years old to think that she knows what is best for every person who chooses to engage in sexual intercourse before marriage- that she, somehow, is in the special club of people who “know what is best for everyone else.” Most people who wear “promise rings” and ‘purity rings” do end up having sex before marriage. Statistically, the people who don such accessories do indeed end up having sex before marriage. In fact, they lose their virginity an average of 6 months later than their non-purity ring wearing peers. The unfortunate thing is, they are too naive and uninformed to wear condoms, so these purity-ring folks are at a much higher risk for STDs and teen pregnancy.

Thank God someone had the guts to say something. Russell Brand was outrageous. I might agree with some of his political beliefs, but the fact of the matter is that he’s a British man who came to America and insulted our politics, our leadership and our country as a whole.

And everything he said about the Jonas Brothers was completely uncalled for. They are promoting good ideals and morals and while everyone expected a short jab about their purity rings, the extent to which Russell Brand mocked them was unnecessary and in horrible taste.

I think she sounded like an idiot. It’s fine to stay a virgin, but she’s just as bad as Brand by labeling all people who have sex “sluts”.

I know that Brand’s jokes weren’t very funny to most (i love him personally) but the Jonas Brothers were LAUGHING. They thought it was funny! So, I find Jordin Sparks’s remark in bad taste. You don’t call people sluts on national television. It’s just rude.

Your opinions belong among friends and family, not on a stage where millions of people are watching.

Also, just because you decide to have sex before marriage, that decsion doesn’t make you a slut. It’s your body to do with as you please. (Please note, I am a virgin.)
