Billboard Ranks Top 10 Singles Ever

Chubby Checker sits atop Billboard”s list of most popular singles of all time with his impacting hit “The Twist”.  Checker, who’s still alive & kicking says “I’m glad they’ve finally recognized it,” describing the song as similar to the invention of the telephone.

“Anyplace on the planet, when someone has a song that has a beat, they’re on the floor dancing apart to the beat, and before Chubby Checker, it wasn’t here, and I think that has a lot to do with me being on the charts,” he said.

Coming in at #2 – Santana‘s “Smooth” and Bobby Darin‘s “Mack the Knife” at #3.

#4 – LeAnn Rimes – “How Do I Live”
#5 – Los Del Rio – “Macarena”
#6 – Olivia Newton John – “Let’s Get Physical”
#7 – Debbie Boone – “You Light Up My Life”
#8 – The Beatles – “Hey Jude”
*9 – Mariah Carey – “We Belong Together”
#10 – Toni Braxton - “Unbreak My Heart”

Now before we all start guffawing, consider what Geoff Mayfield, director of charts at Billboard Magazine has to say– “This is simply a chronicle of how each of these songs performed in their era on the Hot 100. We’re not saying these are the most memorable songs of your life. That would be something that’s almost impossible to determine.  Everyone has a subjective frame of reference.”

In my opinion the most iconic of all, The Beatles (obviously) top other legends such as Madonna, Elton John, Elvis Presley, Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and the Rolling Stones on this list.

Interestingly enough, “The Twist” was the only song ever to reach #1 in two completely seperate chart runs (the album had two seperate releases in its day).

God help us all if Soulja Boy’s “Crank Dat” ever makes this, (or any) list someday.

Fair enough.  Thoughts?
