ALBUM REVIEW: Pussycat Dolls - “Doll Domination”

If the Pussycat Dolls‘ self-titled 2005 album was the mold, then the just-released Doll Domination (the group’s follow up) serves as the Jello jiggler. Staying true to the old adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” Nicole Scherzinger and her backups (theoretically) don’t deviate a whole lot from their schtick, but they do pack a bigger punch this go-round.
While it’s true groups like Danity Kane have vocal as well as performance power across the board, PCD continue to outsell and outshine because their projects play out as more of a reinforced solo project anyways (which makes many wonder why Scherzinger’s solo project never made it out of the cellar).
The lead single “When I Grow Up” is obviously an inescapable hit this summer, while the follow-up, the Missy Elliott-assisted “Whatchu Think About That” lifts females up on an empowering platter, kicking a skeezy ex to the curb. “In Person” is a cut that follows the same path, threatening to “kick” and “hurt” as well. Still not enough for sufferers of female angst? “Happily Never After” is a song about, well.. it doesn’t take a whole lot of thought to know what the material consists of - and maybe this is the group’s legacy. What you see is (and sometimes isn’t) what you get.
“Bottle Pop” is destined to be a hit, in-which the group teams up with Snoop Dogg, this album’s answer to last go-round’s “Buttons”. The Timbaland-produced cut “I Hate This Part” and the 80’s glam cut “Magic” is also certifiable.
