Michael Douglas Admonishes Reporters For Confusing Him With His Characters

I learned something interesting today: actor Michael Douglas is a United Nations Messenger of Peace. What is a Messenger of Peace? I had to look it up:
The United Nations Messengers of Peace are distinguished individuals, carefully selected from the fields of art, literature, music and sports, who have agreed to help focus worldwide attention on the work of the United Nations. Backed by the highest honour bestowed by the Secretary-General on a global citizen for an initial period of three years, these prominent personalities volunteer their time, talent and passion to raise awareness of United Nations’ efforts to improve the lives of billions of people everywhere.
Pretty cool, right?
I also learned something else interesting today: some reporters are kind of… well… dumb.
Michael Douglas appeared today at a U.N. press conference “urging the United States and eight other holdout nations to ratify a nuclear test ban treaty.” However, the L.A. Times reports that it was hard for him to keep the focus on the issue at hand, because reporters kept trying to ask him his opinion of the current worldwide financial turmoil.
Why? Apparently, because they remembered that in 1987, Douglas played banker Gordon Gekko (motto: Greed is good) in the movie Wall Street. One reporter even addressed him by his character’s name.
“Are you saying Gordon that greed is not good?”
“I’m not saying that,” Douglas replied. “And my name is not Gordon. He’s a character I played 20 years ago.”
This is cracking me up, because all I can think of is Leslie Nielsen saying, “And stop calling me Shirley.” (Naked Gun, anyone?) But seriously, wow. Is it really that easy to get assigned to cover the U.N.? Maybe I should have become a “serious” journalist after all. At least I can tell the difference between fiction and reality… at least most of the time!
