Heath Ledger’s Insurance Company Doesn’t Want To Pay Out

heath ledger and matilda ledger

Matilda Ledger is a very rich little girl now, and she’ll be even richer if her father’s life insurance company would just pay out on his insurance policy.

The ReliaStar Insurance Company has been sued for payment, while they are “trying like crazy to find a loophole to avoid paying a hefty settlement.”  And no small wonder:  Heath Ledger’s life insurance policy was worth $10 million dollars.

ReliaStar is refusing to pay out on the grounds that Ledger’s death “could have been a suicide,” despite the coroner’s finding of an accidental overdose.   They also allege that

Ledger lied on his application, presumably on the questions dealing with whether or not the actor was taking any prescription drugs at the time.

Matilda’s attorneys aren’t having it.  They

contend the insurer’s investigation is not only insulting but in violation of California law, where the policy was taken out, because the state forbids companies to reexamine insurance applications after a policyholder dies.

So Matilda doesn’t need the money, right?  But I agree that it adds insult to injury that this insurance company won’t pay on a policy when the beneficiary is a two year old child.  Shame on them.
