Robert Downey Jr. On What Keeps Him Going
Parade Magazine recently asked seven celebrities what keeps them going. Robert Downey, Jr.’s answer was, I thought, pretty inspirational - especially given his history of addiction.
“Faith is not a dirty word. And hope is not for fools. I used to really make fun of optimists. But if all we have are negative world views, we’re in trouble.”
Good job, Robert. Now just keep working your 12-step program and it’ll be all good! Keep an eye out for him in Iron Man 2 and 3, which are in development.

I worked with Downey on Ironman in the Fireman charity function scenes.
.)
One scene on the front steps of the Disney center and one on the rooftop (I am the fireman who walks by with a date when Robert and Gwyneth are on the rooftop - a one 1/10 of a second of fame WOO HOO - freeze frame it on your DVD
He was very nice and always seemed to have running funny entertaining streak with a complete absence of hesitation to do the absurd thing. In a way he seemed to reveal in it.
On the stairs scene where he makes his entrance filmed at the Disney Hall in Los Angeles we were setting up for quite a while. He was near the top of the stairs next to me. Suddenly standing on the steps with lines of fireman flanking each side of the stairs he adopted a one legged standing lotus position (like the sitting lotus with your legs crossed except you keep one leg uncrossed and you stay standing but do the rest with your other leg and hands.) It was amusingly absurd. We chuckled a bit and I chatted with him briefly about the comedy of it all - movie making is sometimes absurd because of the attention focused on it and this one was getting a lot of attention.
I don’t remember the details of the conversion really except that I do remember him saying that he didn’t remember a bit of much of his previous movie making career which seemed an obvious reference to his drug use and he had just gotten out of rehab as I recall at the time. His openness surprised me. He had no hesitation to reference the consequences of that part of his life and I don’t think that many high profile people would be so open in casual conversation.
Anyway he was very open and seemed to be enjoying life and was not uptight at all. It was refreshing becuase many people become very uptight when filming event hough they are usually nice when not filming.
Adding to it all during the filming of that movie there were all kinds of people literally pushing people out of the way to be a part of it . I distinctly remember a Studio exec literally pushing people in the movie standing next to Downey out of the way so he could get in an introduce himself to Downey.
I found Downey to be very open and to have a refreshing grasp of the absurdity of it all.
