‘Dancing with the Stars’ Champion Helio Castroneves Indicted for Tax Evasion
Sounds like another celebrity has gotten himself into financial trouble with the Feds…
This past Thursday, Dancing With The Stars season six champion, and two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, Helio Castroneves was indicted in a federal income tax case in Florida. The 33-year-old driver is charged with conspiracy and six counts of tax evasion for purposely failing to report to the IRS about $5.5 million in income between 1999 and 2004, according to court documents. He could be facing thirty five years in jail as each count carries a maximum five-year prison sentence.
His sister and business manager Katiucia Castroneves and his attorney, Alan Miller, were also indicted.
Helio, who lives in Coral Gables, Florida, appeared in a Miami court Friday afternoon in regards to the charges.
Helio’s lawyer said that he is an innocent victim. “Helio Castroneves is a superb and accomplished professional race car driver,” Miami criminal attorney Mark Seiden, who is representing Castroneves, told PEOPLE. “He is not a tax lawyer and not an accountant. He relied in good faith on competent professionals for tax advice. We don’t feel he did anything wrong and will be vindicated in court.”
Uh oh, Helio! That charm and smile won’t be able to get you outta this one.
