A Grown-Up Maxwell Set to Return to R&B

It’s been 7 years since we’ve heard any new material from neo-soul prince Maxwell (2001’s Now was a smash), and he’s at the brink of his return from a voluntary exodus. It’s hard to imagine someone so successful leaving packed concert halls and platinum-selling albums behind, but look at it this way– at least the Brooklyn, NY native (not to be confused with Scottish mathematician James Clerk Maxwell) did it with a lot more grace than Lauryn Hill!
“The world is so caught up in the `American Idol’ idealistic sort of tendency in regards to just thinking that this whole thing is what everybody wants, but it doesn’t help you make a better record,” the platinum-selling singer says. “I just wanted to kind of be a regular person for a minute, and not have to live up to anything from before.”
Recognize a neo-soul overload, back out for a little bit, and come back when there’s a legitimate need for it once more, and blame it on society. I love it. I’m not mad at it!
His fourth studio album Black Summers’ Night isn’t due out at least until February ‘09, but his accompanying promotional tour schedule is already selling out in high numbers.
Anyways– continuing on:
“People failed to realize that when you’re living such a hyper, super reality of a life, where you’re just doing shows and you’re on TV and you’re talking to this magazine, that doesn’t bode well for trying to talk about everyday stuff that hopefully you’ll connect with people on,” he says. “So a lot of my absence was based on just going out to get life experience, you know. Becoming a guy, becoming a man. I’m 35 years old now. In your 20s you’re just a sketch of what you think you’re trying to be.”
OK. I can buy it now. A couple world-travels, a couple long-term relationships later, our little Max grew up (think the evolution of J5 Michael Jackson into grown-man Michael Jackson, minus the surgeries– we hope).
