AC/DC Disses iTunes, Embraces Wal-Mart For New Album

AC/DC

Legendary rock band AC/DC has a new album releasing later this month, but don’t expect to be able to find it too easily.

Black Ice will only be available through two bricks and mortar stores:  retail gigantor Wal-Mart, and its warehouse stores, Sam’s Club.  Lead singer Brian Johnson said of the decision:

“A lot of people were saying ‘Ah man, you’re going to the big Wal-Mart, you’re selling out,’  Wal-Mart were the only big store to stock all of our albums, every single one of them, and they’ve never deviated. And they sold AC/DC shirts and pajamas for kids, which we thought was really cool.”

Somehow the wholesome family image of Wal-Mart doesn’t fit in my mind with AC/DC, but OK.   But if you’re like me and you don’t shop at Wal-Mart, you might head over to iTunes to buy Black Ice.  However, you won’t find it there.  Johnson said:

“Maybe I’m just being old-fashioned, but this iTunes, God bless ‘em, it’s going to kill music if they’re not careful.”

Johnson defended the band’s decision as

a bid to protect the album format from the Internet’s emphasis on buying single songs.

“It’s a…monster, this thing,” he said. “It just worries me. And I’m sure they’re just doing it all in the interest of making as much…cash as possible. Let’s put it this way, it’s certainly not for the…love, let’s get that out of the way, right away,” he said.

Now this I can understand.  Some albums are meant to be experienced as a whole.   But I do believe there are some albums you can buy on iTunes only in their entirety, so AC/DC could have gone with that option.  At any rate, if you want to purchase the album online, you can do so at Wal-Mart’s website, or go directly to the band’s online home.
