‘American Idol’ Finalist Kellie Pickler Speaks Out About her Depression
Former American Idol finalist and current country music star Kellie Pickler is speaking out about her depression, why she hated the medication, and who helped her come out of it. It seems like the last few years would have been the best of her life- with new boobs, a skinny figure and decent success in the music world- but looks can be deceiving.
“Everything in my professional life seemed great. But in my personal life, I was just crumbling,” she told PEOPLE. The 22 year old Pickler told the magazine that she attempted to take anti-depressants to deal with her issues, but the side effects made her “crazy” and forced her to quit taking them. “I was an emotional wreck,” she said.
Last year, her father, Clyde Raymond Pickler Jr., was arrested twice: once for assaulting a female companion with a steak knife and a second time for stealing abandoned and disabled vehicles and selling them to scrap yards. The arrests came only a year after Pickler’s father had been released from a three-year prison sentence for stabbing his neighbor in 2003, and eventually resulted in more prison time for him. Later that year, Pickler also had to deal with the unexpected re-emergence of her mother that had abandoned her when she was two. Cynthia Malone suddenly came forward and spoke to the media about the family’s troubled past the alleged reasons behind her decision to leave.
Writing songs for her new album (her self-titled sophomore effort was released Sept. 30) as well as her friendships with Idol champion Carrie Underwood and country singer Taylor Swift helped her to pull herself out of the depression and move on.
Kellie also has a new love, Nashville songwriter Kyle Jacobs and has found balance again. “He makes me feel so good about being me,” she says of Jacobs.
Pickler told the magazine that, even though she is not yet ready for marriage, she is still committed to raising a family of her own when she decides to settle down. I’ve always wanted to adopt,” she told PEOPLE. “I wouldn’t do it right now. I definitely have to get my priorities together first.”
Good thinking, Kell. It’s nice to see someone really taking control of their life.
