Queen Latifah: Working With Bees Was “Nerve-Wracking”
The fabulous Queen Latifah stars in The Secret Life Of Bees, which just hit theaters. She talked to Parade Magazine about what it was like to play a beekeeper.
On working with bees:
Funny enough, I am a bee lover. I’ve always been fascinated by them. I watch a lot of Discovery Channel and I’ve been reading a lot on bees and this collapsed hive syndrome, which is reducing their numbers. But when I found out I’d have to work with them in the movie, I was like, ‘Oh, my god. I hope they don’t see me as the enemy.’ I was sure I was going to get stung.
On working with bees WITHOUT GLOVES (eeek!):
Beekeepers don’t really wear them because they’ve been stung so many times that it’s not even a big deal. I ain’t gonna lie it was the most nerve-wracking thing I’ve ever done in my whole career to have bees buzzing around and crawling on me. I’ve driven fast cars. I’ve done stunts. I’ve sat on the edge of a roof five stories up. But this was hard. I had to be so calm and relaxed because when the bees are in a good mood and the queen is happy, they’re happy little insects. I never got stung once.
Lucky Queen La! I’ve never been stung by a bee, and the older I get, the more scared I get of what will happen if I do get stung! I have a newfound respect for the Queen… she’s a brave woman!
