Reese Witherspoon Covers Parade
Reese Witherspoon is interviewed and appears on the cover of Parade Magazine this week. She talks about learning to care for others as a child, her marriage to Ryan Phillippe, the challenges faced by women in Hollywood, and - surprise! - her current relationship with hottie Jake Gyllenhaal.
On growing up in Nashville with traditional values:
It was a close-knit community…Wed go to church and see people in need in the pew next to us, and I was taught compassion and service by watching my parents helping them.
On her marriage to Ryan Phillippe:
I wasnt good about protecting myself…I spent a lot of my 20s just trying to make other people happy, rather than trying to figure out if doing that made me happy.
On being a woman in Hollywood:
It takes perseverance and determination for any young woman to navigate the movie business, she says. Its deeply offensive when they are objectified, treated like sex toys. Its so easy to get attention early on in your career when you promote only the sexual side of yourself. It gains you popularity, but it doesnt mean anything. Five years later, no one knows your name, and you wonder why. Trust me, Ive had my moments, she adds. Im like a junkyard dog. Id say, Why are they asking me to wear a bikini? I get tough, because I see the slippery slope. Ive heard the way roles are cast. There are a lot of women who dont respect themselves and hurt themselves.”
On turning 30:
Turning 30 was really big for me. I can get really stuck on I dont like this or that about myself. Ive found that the only thing that breaks that for me is being able to spend time alone, going to the movies by myself or going to art museums alone. I do that a lot. Ive discovered the importance of even 15 or 30 minutes a day where it is just me.
On whether she’s planning to marry Jake Gyllenhaal:
Family is all we have in life, but I dont know how I feel about marriage. Obviously, Im not far enough out of being married to think about doing it again.”
Reese is one of my favorite actresses out there right now. She’s gorgeous, classy and seems like a great mom. I love the pictures from the article. I Just with they hadn’t digitally altered her for the cover image into something like Marsha Brady.
