Prop 8 – The Musical Features A Star Studded Cast

See more Jack Black videos at Funny or Die

You’ve probably already seen the FunnyorDie video “Prop 8 – The Musical.”  Even if you have, it’s worth another look.   Written by Marc Shaiman (Hairspray), the video takes on last month’s successful ballot proposition that outlawed same-sex marriage in California.

The cast is impressive, but Shaiman admits it was a bit random.

“We filmed it on a Monday. If you couldn’t be there on Monday from 11-4, you couldn’t be in it,” Shaiman explained. “If we’d done it on Tuesday, it might have had a completely different cast.”

The end result was this pretty amazing ensemble cast:

California Gays and The People That Love Them: Jordan Ballard, Margaret Cho, Barrett Foa, J.B. Ghuman, John Hill, Andy Richter, Maya Rudolph, Rashad Naylor, Nicole Parker

Proposition 8′ers and The People That Follow Them: Prop 8 Leader- John C. Reilly Prop 8 Leader’s #1 Wife- Allison Janney Prop 8 Leader’s #2 Wife- Kathy Najimy Riffing Prop 8′er-Jenifer Lewis A Preacher- Craig Robinson Scary Catholic School Girls From Hell-Rashida Jones, Lake Bell, Sarah Chalke

The Frightened Villagers: Katharine “Kooks” Leonard, Seth Morris, Denise “Esi!” Piane, Lucian Piane, Richard Read, Seth Redford, Quinton Strack, Tate Taylor

Jesus Christ: Jack Black

A Very Smart Fellow: Neil Patrick Harris

As for Shaiman’s part, he both enjoys and fears the publicity this video has generated.

“I’m scared…[1.3 million views in barely a day] feels good, until I read some of the angrier comments left by some very angry people. Then I think, well, maybe I shouldn’t leave the house. I’ll just stay on Funny or Die.”

As long as he continues making more videos, I’m cool with that.
