M.I.A. Snags Oscar Nomination for “Slumdog”

The Sri-Lankan mother-to-be, who inarguably had her biggest year in 2008, has an Academy Award nomination to add to her resume, alongside a few recent Grammy nominations as well.  “Paper Planes” was remixed for the film Slumdog Millionaire‘s soundtrack, but it was M.I.A.‘s contributions to “O Saya” that secured her an Oscar nod this morning.

Congratulations!

“Jai Ho”, also from Slumdog, as well as Peter Gabriel‘s “Down to Earth” from Wall-E filled out the three-nominee slot for “Best Song” this year.

Nominees for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song, include:

- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – Alexandre Desplat

- Defiance – James Newton Howard

- Milk- Danny Elfman

- Slumdog Millionaire – A.R. Rahman

- Wall-E – Thomas Newman
