American Idol’s Top 12 Needs Affirmative Action

last-12-semi-finalists-top-36-american-idol

Ok, I swear I am not trying to get political, and I’m not saying that I am for or against affirmative actions in schools, in the workplace, etc. However, I do think that some affirmative action needs to happen on American Idol. (Please keep in mind that I am a white girl from the South, but I am pissed!) As it stands right now, only 1 out of the 9 guaranteed finalists (Lil Rounds) are African-American. Granted, we do have one finalist with a disability, one straight out of Puerto Rico and another of hispanic descent. All of these things make me happy.

However, the producers OBVIOUSLY put Tatiana del Toro through for ratings. She is definitely not any better than passed over minorities Kai Kalama and Ju’Not Joyner. Ju’Not should have been in the wild card round, at the very least. Yes, it’s up to America’s vote, but no one can sit here and tell me that the producers had nothing to do with Sanajaya making it into the finals, or Tatiana going forward to the wild card round.

Granted, 16 year old commercially cute as a button Jasmine Murray will also have a shot, but she isn’t high on the favorites list to make it. What are your thoughts? Is American Idol “fixed” in some ways? Should there be a guaranteed number of minorities?

12.8% of Americans are African-American as of 2007.
12.8% of 12 is 1.5, so seeing that there are 2 African-American’s in the final 12, I’d say that it’s a pretty fair selection.

So we should just put people in the Top 12 just because they are black? Is that what you are saying? If that is what you are saying, then I think you are way off base. We should be judging people based on talent, not skin color.

what im saying is that there were some black contestants much more talented than some who made it to the wild card just because they would shake things up… but after the wild card round i am happy to retract my statement. i am thrilled with who the judges chose to round out the finalists!!

WHY? are minorities better or worse at singing well? who do you consider a minority? the minority of what? a minority of talented people? what are you talking about, “minorities.” What or who is a minority according to you?
