How Serious Is Robin Williams’ Heart Surgery?

Earlier this week, several sources reported that comedian Robin Williams is scheduled for heart surgery. Apparently while on tour in Florida, he went to the hospital “complaining of shortness of breath,” was transferred to the ICU, and eventually was diagnosed with a need for aortic heart valve replacement.
In typical fashion, his statement downplayed his condition:
“I’m so touched by everyone’s support and well wishes. This tour has been amazing fun and I can’t wait to get back out on the road after a little tune-up.”
Well, this particular surgery is a little more than a “tune up.” It is needed because blood is not flowing through his heart correctly, and if not corrected, it can become quite serious. Unfortunately, I personally know way more about this than I ever wanted to know, because my hubby had this same surgery last year! While heart surgeons call this procedure fairly common (over 17,000 were performed in the U.S. in 2007 – former first lady Barbara Bush just had it last week, and I personally know two other people besides my sweetie who’ve had it), open heart surgery is still a big deal. It means about a week in the hospital, and about 6 weeks recovery at home afterwards. I would expect that Williams will not be back on the road for at least a couple more months. If he is, I’d be really surprised.
I am sure my BSC colleagues join me in wishing him all the best with surgery and recovery!
