PETA’s Latest Target: The Pet Shop Boys

petshop_280x390_491183a

The folks at PETA have officially lost their minds.  They have evidently run out of currently popular fur-clad celebrities and famous folk to dress up in leafy green vegetables, so they’re reaching alllll the way back to the 1980s to apply their unique form of activism.

Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe of the 1980s electro-pop group The Pet Shop Boys received a letter from PETA last week asking them to change their name to The Rescue Shelter Boys.

See, the band is about to go on tour to promote their new album “Yes.”  Evidently PETA is suddenly concerned that the band’s  name, which they’ve used for more than 20 years, will glorify the poor conditions that animals sometimes suffer in pet shops.

Neil and Chris have politely declined PETA’s request.

The musicians said they were “unable to agree” to the request “but nonetheless think (it) raises an issue worth thinking about.”

I understand that PETA has been pretty busy the last 30 years.  It’s just that you’d think that they might have taken the time to target The Pet Shop Boys when they were… well, popular?   Like, when a request like this might have meant something to more than just the few of us still breathing who actually listened to this band when they were actually making hits?  I mean heck, they were and still are one of my favorite bands – I was just listening to them yesterday, in fact – but as y’all know, I’m old.    This “activism” sounds nearly comically desperate on PETA’s part… time to hire a new strategist or two, I think.
