The production of the Twilight sequel “New Moon” was halted after Heidi Stanton accused her former roommate Stephanie Meyer of plagiarism. Apparently Heidi hasn’t been living in this world for the past year and didn’t know what “Twilight” was really about until she finally saw the movie on DVD and realized it was very similar to a short story she had wrote back in 1993.
“Quite frankly, I was shocked when I began watching the movie with my husband last week. I immediately told him that she got that idea from me! I wrote a fictional short story with the same ideas when we were in college together.” stated Stanton.
Heidi and Stephanie were roommates during their sophomore year at a campus dormitory at the Brigham Young University during the early 1990′s. Although Stephanie claims the story came to her in a dream in 2003, it seems like Heidi has proof and one professor who clearly remembers her short story.
Mrs. Stanton’s claims have some credence to them as she has documented proof that a short story with very similar idea was written by her in 1993 while she was a sophomore at BYU. English department chairperson Dr. Peter Benton was at the time a second year professor of writing and distinctly remembers Ms. Stanton’s prolific writing style and the vampire story in particular.
“The story stood out in my mind, at the time, because it was more advanced than most sophomore students usually presented, also the vampire story stood out because I had recently taught a series of lectures on Brahm Stoker’s Dracula.” claims Dr. Benton. “I felt at the time that Heidi had brought a very current and up to date look at a classic subject.”
There is no word on if and when the production of “New Moon” will be resumed and the 2009 release date is in jeopardy. This will make a lot of crazy fans really mad!
