I’m Nick Wolfwood, and I’m counting down all this summer’s movie releases, big and small, weekend by weekend from May 1st – August 28th.
Here’s what opens on June 19th:

Year One
Starring: Jack Black, Michael Cera, Olivia Wilde, June Diane Raphael, David Cross, Juno Temple, Oliver Platt, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Hank Azaria
What it’s about: When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers (Black and Cera) are banished from their primitive village, they set off on an epic journey through the ancient world.
Rating: R
Thoughts: This actually looks like it could be pretty funny, quite a set of comedians here. This movie reminds me of Mel Brooks History of the World: Part One.

My Life in Ruins
Starring: Richard Dreyfuss, Nia Vardalos, Harland Williams, Caroline Goodall, Rachel Dratch
What it’s about: A travel guide rediscovers her romantic side on a trip around Greece.
Rating: R
Thoughts: This movie is standard faire romantic comedy, Nia Vardalos seems permanently stuck in this genre after her breakthrough My Big Fat Greek Wedding. This looks nowhere near that quality.

The Proposal
Starring: Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson, Betty White
What it’s about: A pushy boss forces her young assistant to marry her in order to keep her Visa status in the U.S. and avoid deportation to Canada.
Rating: PG-13
Thoughts: Now, much of the time movies like this don’t have my interest, but this movie actually looks really funny, the whole cast is great! How can you go wrong with Betty White?

Cheri
Starring: Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathy Bates, Rupert Friend, Felicity Jones, Frances Tomelty
What it’s about: A romantic drama set in 1920s Paris, where the son of a courtesan retreats into a fantasy world after being forced to end his relationship with the older woman who educated him in the ways of love.
Rating: R
Thoughts: The whole ‘romantic drama, 1920s’ is just about enough to turn me off to this movie. Throw in the extra cheesy aspects that this seems to include and just count me out. No thank you.

Whatever Works
Starring: Henry Cavill, Evan Rachel Wood, Patricia Clarkson, Kristen Johnston, Michael McKean, Larry David
What it’s about: An eccentric man (Larry David) runs into a girl from the South named Melodie (Evan Rachel Wood). The two of them, joined by Melodie’s mother and father, get into a series of highly improbable, far out, romantic entanglements.
Rating: PG-13
Thoughts: On the surface this movie doesn’t sound that great, but if you like Woody Allen movies I’ll probably be pretty entertaining for you.
