NY Times Covers ‘Real Housewife’ Bethenny Frankel Hula Hooping

Bethenny Frankel Hula Hooping

This story has made me question the journalistic integrity of one of the most prestigious newspapers around- the New York Times. They recently did a story in their “A Night Out With” column on Real Housewife of New York, Bethenny Frankel. Was it a write up on her new book Naturally Thin? Or a piece about one of her signature cocktails? No, it was a story about her hula hooping… Classy!

“I THOUGHT Hula-Hooping was a daytime sport,” said Bethenny Frankel, giving a big blue hoop a whirl around her tiny waist. “But you got to rock it, don’t stop it — like you’re rocking it in the nighttime.” She giggled while thrusting her hips forward and back. In a baby T and skin-tight Paige jeans, Ms. Frankel, the only woman who has yet to marry on the Bravo reality series “Real Housewives of New York,” was at Tortilla Flats in the West Village for the weekly Hula-Hoop competition with her date, Jason Hoppy.

“My friends call him ‘Tenjune’ — that’s his name,” Ms. Frankel said, referring to the nightclub in the meatpacking district where the couple met. Mr. Hoppy, who says he works in real estate, saw Ms. Frankel getting attention from photographers, he said, and walked up and said something unprintable. She liked that.

The rest of the story goes on to further exacerbate the feud between Bethenny and co-star Kelly Killoren Bensimon. Way to go, NY Times! At least now we know the identity of her new boy toy!

I don’t know how it’s not relevent, or appropriate, for the NY Times to cover Bethenny Frankel. She’s a star on a nationally-broadcast, hit show, and she lives in New York City. And she’s obviously a trendsetter for fashion and culture. Millions of people are watching TRHONYC each week and so it’s having an impact on the broader culture of this country. Some people might find that distasteful, and be dismissive, because it’s only a common “cable network” show, but I think it’s a sign of the changing times. I say, deal with it. And cut the NY Times some slack. They’re up against a wall because they’re losing readership, and trying to turn a profit, and it seems like no matter what they do lately, they’re wrong.
