I’m Nick Wolfwood, and I’m counting down all this summer’s movie releases, big and small, weekend by weekend from May 1st – August 28th.
Here’s what opens on August 14th:

Bandslam
Starring: Gaelan Connell, Alyson Michalka, Vanessa Hudgens, Lisa Kudrow, Charlie Saxton, Tim Jo
What it’s about: A new kid in town assembles a fledgling rock band — together, they achieve their dreams and compete against the best in the biggest event of the year, a battle of the bands.
Rating: PG
Thoughts: Another one of those movies with a very boring premise. Not interested.

District 9
Starring: Sharlto Copley, David James, Jason Cope, Mandla Gaduka, Vanessa Haywood, Kenneth Nkosi, Louis Minnaar
What it’s about: An extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth suddenly find a kindred spirit in a government agent that is exposed to their biotechnology.
Rating: TBA
Thoughts: I’m really wondering how this one is going to turn out, I love a good sci-fi film. Very little has been seen of the Aliens in the film, hopefully they are somewhat believable.

A Perfect Getaway
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Timothy Olyphant, Milla Jovovich, Steve Zahn, Marley Shelton, Kiele Sanchez, Dale Dickey
What it’s about: Two pairs of lovers (Zahn & Jovovich, Olyphant & Sanchez) on a Hawaiian vacation discover that psychopaths are stalking and murdering tourists on the islands.
Rating: R
Thoughts: I love Milla Jovovich and Steve Zahn so I’m automatically interested in seeing this. I just hope it’s got an interesting story with some good twists.

Taking Woodstock
Starring: Liev Schreiber, Emile Hirsch, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Paul Dano, Eugene Levy, Dan Fogler, Kelli Garner, Imelda Staunton, Demetri Martin, Daniel Eric Gold
What it’s about: A man working at his parents’ motel in the Catskills inadvertently sets in motion the generation-defining concert in the summer of 1969.
Rating: R
Thoughts: I’m a big fan of director Ang Lee, he really knows how to illustrate personal relationships in films in a way few directors can. Unfortunately for me I’m incredibly bored by the subject matter, but I’ll probably see it anyway.

The Time Traveler’s Wife
Starring: Eric Bana, Rachel McAdams, Ron Livingston, Stephen Tobolowsky, Arliss Howard, Brooklynn Proulx, Michelle Nolden
What it’s about: A romantic drama about a Chicago librarian (Bana) with a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel, and the complications it creates for his marriage.
Rating: PG-13
Thoughts: I like a strange new premise in a movie, plus there are some great actors in this film. Should be interesting.

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard
Starring: Will Ferrell, Ed Helms, Jeremy Piven, Ving Rhames, Noureen DeWulf, Ken Jeong, David Koechner
What it’s about: Used-car liquidator Don Ready is hired by a flailing auto dealership to turn their Fourth of July sale into a majorly profitable event.
Rating: TBA
Thoughts: Funny comics mixed with some car dealership humor, could be good. Or it might be very run-of-the-mill, I’m hoping it’s the first.

I Sell the Dead
Starring: Dominic Monaghan, Ron Perlman, Larry Fessenden, Angus Scrimm, John Speredakos, Eileen Colgan, Brenda Cooney
What it’s about: 18th century justice catches up with a pair of grave robbers. With only a few hours to go before his date with the guillotine, Arthur Blake (Monaghan) tells his life story to Father Francis Duffy (Ron Perlman). Before long, Arthur spills the beans on how he got started in the grim corpse peddling business with seasoned ghoul Willie Grimes (Fessenden).
Rating: TBA
Thoughts: I’m a fan of movies like Army of Darkness and Evil Dead; this movie has that kind of vibe to it. It’s definitely a horror/comedy, it should be a lot of fun.
~

Ponyo
Starring: Yuria Nara, Hiroki Doi, Jôji Tokoro, Tomoko Yamaguchi, Yuki Amami, Kazushige Nagashima, Akiko Yano
What it’s about: An animated adventure centered on a 5-year-old boy and his relationship with a goldfish princess who longs to become human.
Rating: G
Thoughts: Yeah the story SOUNDS boring and childish, but the director of this film is Hayao Miyazaki. He’s the famed director of great films like Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke and My Neighbor Totoro so this film is pretty much guaranteed to be good.
~

Pool Boys
Starring: Efren Ramirez, Matthew Lillard, Brett Davern, Rachelle Lefevre, Robert Davi, Tom Arnold, George Takei
What it’s about: A pool boy and a gardener turn an empty mansion into a home for women who belong to the world’s oldest profession.
Rating: TBA
Thoughts: Certainly a funny premise and these actors are pretty funny.
