Professional golfer, Phil Mickelson, and his family are having a difficult year it sounds like.  Just seven weeks after his wife Amy announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer, Phil’s mother, Mary, has done the same.

Tina Mickelson, Phil’s sister, said July 6 that Mary will have surgery at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, the same hospital where Amy is being treated, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Although Tina Mickelson did not describe Mary’s condition, she said of Mickelson’s wife Amy, “She is hanging in there … She still has a long road ahead of her, but at least things are looking like they are heading in the right direction.”

I can’t imagine how difficult this is for the family. Phil had taken time out from golfing earlier this year to be with his wife, but was able to return to the Stanford St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tenn.,and he finished second at the U.S. Open in June.
