Karl Lagerfeld Rips Retirement Rumours & Audrey Tautou

Karl Lagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld has never been one to hold back, perhaps that is part of his success. The great couturier of the House of Chanel is taking to task those pesky retirement rumours and one actress, Audrey Tautou.

About his reported step down and imminent replacement:

I asked Mr. Lagerfeld about the new collection, about staying current, and about those blog reports that he would leave Chanel and be replaced by Alber Elbaz of Lanvin. Mr. Lagerfeld said to forget about it. He was going to die with his boots on. He also mentioned that Alain Wertheimer, whose family owns Chanel, said he would sell the house when the designer leaves. This might not be the case, Mr. Lagerfeld said, but it was a nice thing to be told.

Tautou, who is starring in the newest film about Coco Chanel, incurred the wrath of the designer for an off-handed remark that did not praise the high style of Chanel:

Asked if she wears a lot of Chanel, she replied: “Sometimes. This morning, I wore the rain boots.”

Lagerfeld has suggested Penelope Cruz would have been a more fitting choice for the role of the grande dame of the legendary fashion house and mentions that he doesn’t “make rain boots.” Ouch!
