Twilight Scandal – Stephenie Meyer Sued For Ripping Off Breaking Dawn
If this isn’t a case of desperate gold digging, I don’t know what is. TMZ is reporting that the massively successful, Stephenie Meyer is being sued by Jordan Scott for stealing her story line to write the latest book in her Twilight series, Breaking Dawn.
Scott claims the 4th installment of Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” series lifted her work. She says Meyer’s book — “Breaking Dawn” is a “significant literary departure from [her] early books…” She says it seems the book is “written by a teenager.” Yes, Scott was a teenager when she wrote “The Nocturne.”
Scott claims the two books “show striking, articulable and substantial similarities in the … plot lines, themes, dialogue, mood, setting, pace, characters, sequence of events, ideas and other similarities.”
Here are some of those similarities,
– Both books contain a post-wedding sex scene
– Both books contain a scene about a woman who’s sick because she’s carrying a child with “evil powers”
– Both books contain a scene with the death of the main character’s wifeAnd according to Scott, the dialogue in all of these scenes — and more — is extremely similar.
Jordan Scott wants all the copies of Breaking Dawn pulled and impounded, along with ‘damages’.
Like I said before, I think this is a total crock. But, I want to hear what you think. Has this part of the Twilight Saga been stolen? Drop a comment and sound off below.

Everything is a spin off of everything these days! Which means, anyone who thinks Meyers is gracing them by taking part of their story lines will come out of the wood work now that it is an enormous world wide sensation! Funny…we didn’t hear of this when the books were released at all! Hey…one of my books has a vampire in it too. I see a similarity! LOL
Get real! Let the world read and the evil Scott needs to pat herself on the back for trying to be a gold digger! Scott is just jealous and it amounts to nothing more!

I read the PDF and what can I say? The dialogue similarities are rather frequent, and news stories would be far more convincing if they posted dialogue snippets. I feel bad for this girl; she will immediately be called a gold-digger without people reading further into the story.
I am not surprised, though … has anyone ever seen the TV series Roswell? Isn’t Twilight a bit TOO similar to Roswell, except that vampires are swapped out for aliens? The two are biology class partners … he saves her life … his siblings are pissed when he shares their secret … they go to an Indian reserve to find out secrets about their origin … a little too similar; all the postings on the Roswell site at Hulu are like, Umm, isn’t this Twilight? Except that Roswell came first.
I think Stephenie Meyer just reads a lot of teen lit and watches teen tv shows and writes the equivalent of fan fic.
All of the books from the twilight saga have the same mood throughout the whole story line…anyone who reads or watches anything pertaining to vampires and love could say that the idea was taken…ever since twilight made it big, all you see is things everywhere involving vampires. Like the “Vampire Diaries” coming on tv; about a vampire trying to fit in and falling in love with a human. I think that anyone would want to try to be affiliated with anything dealing with Twilight, since the movie came out, but too bad. Stephanie Meyer is a great writer and deserves all the glory without someone trying to steal her thunder.
Renesmee’s powers aren’t exactly “evil”! As for being written by a teenager, that’s ridiculous because everyone has their own writing style based on their own personality –I know many adults who think they are still teenagers, in fact the world is full of people like that– not to mention that she HAD to write it for her intended audience, after all. Death of the main character’s wife. As far as I know, **Bella** IS the main character, NOT Edward. Edward’s the main character in **Midnight Sun** –which I hope will be published despite all the stuff people do to Stephenie! I’d love to get in Edward’s head!– NOT the Twilight saga (Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn). This law suit is ridiculous –it would make more sense under the current accusations if it were done **after** Edward’s version of Breaking Dawn, though I hope it doesn’t!! –and I hope Stephenie wins. It’s really outrageous!
honestly? I am a writer and I know that it is virtually impossible to have a completely original idea. I have written 3 novellas, non of which have been published, but they have been written. One is about 4 friends who are just trying to get through their Freshman Year together. Another is about a girl with a ‘so-called perfect boyfriend’ who turns out to be an insane psycho-killer. And my most recent one is about a girl whos father dies in a tragic accident and she has to learn how to live her life without him. Im sure that if you read them, you would find similarities to other novels, because people write what they know. I read a lot of Meg Cabot and Sarah Dessen, so that comes out in my works. Just because something is similar, does not mean that it’s ripped off. There is no such thing as an original idea anymore. So just back off people. It may have been in her head subconciously, but that doesnt mean that she purposely plagiarized another authors works. Also, from the alleged similarities… wow, talk about gold-digging. In my last book my characters got married in their house and then had a post-marrital sex scene… the guy was also quite intent on keeping it that way. Did I plagiarize Breaking-Dawn too?
this scott person needs to grow up and stop trying to take all the glory of what she dident do. i mean if you read a assortiment of books im sure u will se the similarties in a bunch of them. if people r going to try to say someone is ripping off there plot lines make sure they use something more origanal.

I think she saying all of this about Stephenie Meyer book Breaking Dawn becuase she mad that her book did not get all the fame and was turned in to a movie. She wished her book was as famous as the Twilight Saga.

I think this is absolutely true, Stephanie Meyer is a terrible writer and stealing someone else’s plot/storyline oneshots and other major things is a sign of a writer dwindling down and asking for help because their comsumed by all the success. Stealing is a very very low blow in production success and she just basically committed literature suicide.
I think this might just be a misunderstanding. Maybe it was done by accident. Maybe Stephanie has read Jordan Scotts books a while ago, and when she was writing Breaking Dawn, she subconciously started writing similar things. Jordan Scotts books probably stuck in her head while she was writing and didnt realize that the ideas she thought she was coming up with, were actually memories of reading Jordan Scotts books. I dont think she should be sued for that. There are alot of books out there that are very similar to other books. Not all of those writers are being sued. Besides Stephanies books are WAY better!!!! Her books are WAY more popular. And shes sold alot more than Jordan Scott has ever sold. lol I think Stepanie Meyer should be left alone. I honestly dont think she purposefully did this.
I think that Stephenie Meyer is a wonderful writer, and there is no way in the world that she would do something like that. OMg! I thought I was the only one who saw similar stories in both roswell and twilight! The scene with liz looking at max after she gets shot is reminescent of vella after Edward saves her from the car. But I appreciate both stories, along a all the hot actors! LOL p

gosh, if breaking dawn did get pulled and impounded (which theres no way in hell) then, they’d be wasting their time, im sure that almost everyone who likes the twilight saga and has read them, has a copy already. This is so stupid, so if i wrote a book, and i had the characters wait to go have sex, and then it turns out that the guy wasnt a human or something, and then she almost dies, then Holy****. im coping this. and half the other things, today, lots of books are about waiting, and forbidden love and stuff, because THAT right there, is what keeps us teens reading. not some, that guy and i are dating, lets go do it, ladadadada crap. i mean, sometimes yes, but whatever, Jordan Scott needs to get a live and stop suing for false reasons. sorry for my language, this is just what i think.
This is so not going to make it to the courts. Stephanie’s writings came from her dreams. This other person is just a child and probably her parents want more money so they decided to sue. Scott is just upset that her own book didn’t fair as well as Twilight did. Maybe because the writing is so different in Twilight that it only proves that the story is Stephanie’s and not Scott.

Well if it’s just those three reasons for claiming “Breaking Dawn” a copy then i don’t think there is anything to worry about. I mean come on, how many books can you think of that have a post wedding sex scene? And i am one hundred percent sure that there are hundred more books that the main characters wife dies. As for a mother with an evil baby living inside her, you could tell that twilight was heading in that direction before “Breaking Dawn” was even close to being finished. This is just my opinion, but i think i make a very valid point in saying “Breaking Dawn” is definitely not a rip-off of “The Nocturn”

Okay, first off, what do people do after they get married? They go on a honey-moon and do you-know-what. Secondly, Bella is sick because Renesmee is using her blood as, like, a food source, not because she has “evil powers”. Come on, Renesmee’s power is COOL, not evil, and she’s half-vampire for crying out loud. Third, Bella is not a les-bo; she’s not married to a woman, so she doesn’t have a wife. And if my memory serves me right, Edward didn’t die, and i wouldn’t include Bella becoming a vampire as dying. Now, as for the similar dialogue, I don’t know, but there are only so many types of sentences and questions and whatever-else that one can use for scenes, like the ones listed. If you ask me, this Scott person is just jealous that she didn’t come up with THIS idea, first.
That is SOO unfair. Stephanie meyer is an AMAZING author and SCOTT should just forget about it. This sounds like a good way for Scott to get people to buy and read her work. You know what they say, there is no such thing as bad media time. So Scott brings this up and now many Twilight fans that are out of stuff to read will go pick up Scott’s books to see for theirself, and wow now Scott has a best seller.

i think, when you’re a writer, your writings are all fairly similar to other books that really inspired you. i started writing a book, and the way i described things and the narrator’s perception of things sounded a lot like the way stephenie meyer described things in the twilight saga, even to me. everyone has their own opinion of stephenie meyer and of the twilight saga, but a lot of books are going to have similarities. and, if you’ve read breaking dawn, you know the baby bella was carrying wasn’t “evil,” they were only afraid of her because they had never heard of a situation like that and they were afraid she would hurt bella or be impossible to control. she was actually a very innocent, sweet child. and you can’t tell an author to stop writing a book just because it’s similar to something you’ve written! that’s the stupidest thing i’ve ever heard! jeez. everyone just needs to chill out. a lot of books are going to have similarities. there are only so many ideas in the world. and if she doesn’t have any more than three similarities(which aren’t even exactly right…) and “similar dialogue” (which tons of books have…), then she should really just let it go. i understand that it’s frustrating to have your work stolen, but i really don’t believe it was stolen. and i think breaking dawn was not that different at all from the other books. and how in the world would she write three books before the one she ripped off? three books that LEAD UP TO the storyline that she supposedly ripped off? it doesn’t make any sense.

Stupid! Alot of books are about vampires that fall in love with mortals, but nobody has copy rights on that. There isn’t even much in commen about breaking dawn and that Idiots book.
Stephenie Meyer is an amazing writer whose writing style is completely unique. I personally have never read anything that has made me feel more in tune with the characters and their lives. I am reading all books for the second time after only stumbling upon the series a month ago.
I think it is silly to think that having similar characters means someone has “ripped off” someone elses ideas. If you asked 10 people to write a story about a human in love with a vampire all 10 people would come up with 10 different books all the while there would be similarities.
I am so pissed that Stephenie is having to deal with more bs after what happened to her with Midnight Sun. I was holding out hope that Stephenie would one day change her mind and decide to continue with the Midnight Sun project (If Anthony Hopkins can change his mind about doing another Hannibal movie Stephenie is certainly allowed to change hers) but can see that the whole Twilight Saga will end up being a project she will want to let rest.
While I am a huge fan of the Twilight books you can probably tell it is a bit of a sore subject that Stephenie has decided not to continue her project because one person let her down. Hopefully one day she will be in the right frame of mind to continue.

I don’t think Meyer copied tbh, this Jordan’s just got a grudge for some reason. Maybe because Meyer’s books are doing so well and Twilight was a phenomeon? And with highly anticipated New Moon coming up, Scott’s just jealous.
Compared to other young adult/fantasy/romance/horror writers, Meyer’s done exceptionally well and is up there with JK Rowling. Other authors are just scowling at her and are trying to sabotage her.

Honestly if those are the similarities she is basing it on she should also be suing the writers of charmed, rosemary’s baby, and about a trillion other authors and screen writers who wrote long before Ms. Jordan Scott was born. Those are general ideas, that are hardly original, additionally in order to prove that some one plagiarized you, there has to be very specific things that are similar or the same, like dialogue or characters. Breaking Dawn is written partly in Jacobs voice, which has appeared in previous Twilight books not just Breaking Dawn, most the books are written from in Bella’s voice, naturally they are going to sound different. The characters are her own, their voices are her own, the specific interactions of the characters looks and personalities are her own, and Breaking Dawn keeps true to them. I seriously doubt that Ms. Scott has a leg to stand on.

You can take any book and compare it to another book, easily-its just how someone looks at it. Its easy to compare random things and make them see like there another, especially if you believe it enough. Scott probably wont win, and if she does, then she gets what she wants. In the end Jordan Scott probably just angry because her book wasn’t has much of a hit, now she getting what she wants-in the spotlight.

i really dont think Stephenie Meyer stole from jordan scott even though i never read her books i did read all four of Stephenie Meyer’s
books and i love her books! she is the greatest author i have ever read from and i read alot but thats off the point i absolutely think that STEPHENIE MEYER would NEVER!!! steal from another author so i really hope that Stephenie Meyer wins. i hope she makes another book in Bella’s point of view.

Okay honestly how long has breaking dawn been out? Scott is just coming out with this now? Sounds like a bunch of bull, besides its a little too late for all the copies to get thrown out, how many sales has it made already? Are they really going to track every person who owns it and take it away because it was stolen, no because that is just stupid. The damage is done whether it was stolen (Which I don’t really think it is although I have never read Scott’s books) or not.
Breaking Dawn is the inevitable conclussion to the Twilight series. Scott needs to realize that all works of art have a basis in all other works of art. it is foolish to think she could get books pulled or even sucessfully file a suit

I think he’s just trying to get some publicity because of how big the Twilight Saga has gotton. So what if ther are a few similarities. I think its common to have sex after you get married. I mean, thats what the honeymoon IS for, no? And, I’m pretty sure Bella doesn’t die, so, that takes out the idea of death of the main charaters wife. And, Renesmee doesn’t have evil powers. She has VAMPIRE powers. It’s all for publicity. Plus, the other 3 books built up to all of the happenings of Breaking Dawn. So, its not like she read the guys book, and wrote her own. No, she had a dream, and wrote a saga of books for us to enjoy.

But If there truly were so many similarities, we would’ve heard shortly after the book came out. Not now, a year later.

Like maybe someone saw a vampire movie, and they decide, they’re going to twist the way vampires are a little, and write a book with their own plot, that doesn’t mean they’re plagarizing the vampire movie. It means they got inspiration.
I also doubt SM even got the diea from Scott’s book. The sex scene after a wedding, dear lord, that’s not exactly uncommon,
And the “Evil powers” not really. Nessie was just stronger than Bella was.

for every person on here saying…” i haven’t even heard of those books” or ” she is just jealous because stephanies books are famous” do you remember a show called “Roswell” that lasted from 1999-2002 well the tv sereis was based on Jordan Scotts books. and i can honestly say that you dont have to read scott’s books to see the resemblance between the two, just watch the first episode of Roswell and you will be able to see why Jordan is upset. however i dont really see a huge comparison to “Breaking Dawn” if anything i see a resemblance of roswell to twilight.
i’ve never read Scott’s novels so i can’t know if Meyer ripped them off…. BUT i do think Meyer took a bit too much from the original vampire diaries book series which was published in 1991. like stefan (the vampire in vampire diaries) can read minds, there’s a psychic which girl similar to alice the psychic vampire, the main characters get engaged, stefan is trying to be a good vampire and drinks the blood of animals, stefan is rich and drives a hot car, he’s a vampire in high school, and so on. there’s even more similarities if you just read the books.
now i’m not saying i don’t like Meyer’s books. i read them all and i liked them. but i think she took to much from other books. yes she has a good writing style and she is a good writer, she just doesn’t have enough original stuff. and i know its hard to come up with new stuff, especially in the vampire genre because so many people are writing about this. i’m a writer myself and i know how hard it is to be original. i’m not saying i want her books taken of the shelves, but if what Scott is accusing her of is true, then she has every right to be angry. i’d be pissed if somebody copied off my novels. people are just being too sensitive about this because twilight is so loved. but look at it from the author’s perspective. it sucks when somebody else gets famous for rewriting your novel.
There unlimmited ways to write an original story that is not similar to anyone. So if your stories are similar to others it’s telling that;
1. You’ve been inflenced by everything around you, mostly pop culture.
2. You should not see movies or read books when you’re on your writing process.
3. The plots of your books are not original.
4. You writing on a subject that are often writed about.
I don’t like twilight but I can’t say that those similarities with the nocture made it a rip off. I can that Twilight is pop culture and that pop culture therefore ofters similarities and no originality.
Ok I actually loved the series Twilight.. But I’m not into the whole “Stephenie can do no wrong” idea. As an author I completely agree that there is really no such thing as an “original idea” because out of the billions of ppl on this earth…some think the same and if given a storyline will come up with similar material. I dont think its fair to sue Stephenie but at the same time her idea is not completely ORIGINAL..I am a big fan of LJ smith who wrote her stuff a decade befiore Steph. “dreamed” twilight (And for the record to the young readers the NEW show on tv VAMPIRE DIARIES might be a new show but was written way before).. And yes I also loved Roswell and that is fairly similar as well and came out a long time ago…. Stephenie was definately not the first to write about a forbidden romance and she will not be the last either….
And I’d like to mention that the first three books were equally interesting and exciting..They were all better than Breaking Dawn by farrrrrr

Stephenie meyer is a shameless, talentless liar. She completely stole the plotline from Vampire Diaries, even DIRECTLY copying some of the text. She hasn’t got an original thought in her stupid simpering head. She ripped off L.J. Smith and then decided to tell everyone it ‘came to her in a dream.’ Who does she think she is, the virgin mary? Aside from her books being terribly written, they send out a destructive message to teenage girls that its perfectly fine for boys they barely know to creep into their room at night, follow them 24/7, and take the engine out of their car to stop them seeing any other boys.
Sure, it’s possible for two people to have vaguely similar ideas, but to anyone who’s read the books it’s blindingly obvious that stephenie liar simply rewrote the vampire diaries and attempted to pass it off as her own. She’s so stupid she didn’t even think she’d get caught. Karma’s a b***h though. She’ll get what’s coming to her.
I, for one am not so enchanted by these pop drama adaptations of vampire myth that I would actually judge who plagiarized who based on a blog entry!
And to defend Meyer so whole-heartedly without even bothering to read the other book and actually spend 2 minutes thinking about it let alone view a comparisson of the alledged plagiarized content?? Wow! It seems like most fans would even go to war to defend the series and its author!
Compare these books to modern fiction of other themes…could they all be the same tricks thrown in the blender with a new flavour added? Please considder how embarrassing this obsession will be when you look back on it in the years to come.
If you’re still reading may I suggest resorting back to “reality tv” as an escape from reality? It’s still mind-rot but a tad less shamefull (and only a tad).
Oh, and ofcourse maybe read Bram Stoker’s Dracula before you even think of speaking like an authority on vampire literature. Then maybe Goethe’s Faust and some Nietzsche to understand the the origin and context of any “dark” theme. Oh, and they’re so old there are legal downloads, tho i was kinda hoping someone would accuse me of advertising so i could laugh myself to death.

Before stating Jordan as a “golddigger” people should be fully informed of the argument.
Having read the .PDF file which compares the two books, I actually agree that there are huge similarities. The stories are practically identical, the characters act very similarl, even discussions, conversations and descriptions are almost the same.
Yes, it’s hard to write an unoriginal story today since it’s all been done before, but no two books will ever be as similar as these.
Meyer really does seem to have lifted every part of BD from this book, even down to the details such as Bella believing her child was a boy, when really it was born a girl.
It’s a great shame, but I for one am glad the real author took a stand and sued.

They both imitated Anne Rice. Lewis from Interview with the Vampire fed on animals and was conflicted with his nature/impulses…they just spun it a new way…and as I am not old enough – she could have copied off someone else…though hers were more gory…
Stephanie Meyer copied an other book too called “Afer Twilight” (made in 1992) About a girl meeting a dreammy vampire named Jason. They fall inlove, and the girl wants to be transferred into a vampire but Jason refuses and calls himself a monster. Sound Familiar? As well As a bad vampire hunting her. This book also contains were wolfs. I was really dissapointed affter reading this book. Stephanie Meyer did not dream up her plot, she totally copied it from this book!
