Neil Patrick Harris Covers New York Magazine
The amazing and talented Neil Patrick Harris, who hosts the Emmys on Sunday and is nominated for an award, appears on the cover of New York Magazine this week. The interview, by Emily Nussbaum, is worth a read. Go pick it up at a newsstand, or get it here.
Just a few highlights…
On feeling conflicted about realizing he was gay:
…I tried many different angles to head in a different direction. Dating different girls, being the funny, witty guy at the party, to avoid being a sexual being. I wasn’t thought of in a sexual way, which is easy when you have big ears and the neck and are called Doogie all the time.
On how early fame made him self conscious:
… you’re a youngster, and you’re in the public, and people are recognizing you – it’s hard to behave normally. It was like a circus sideshow. You’d wear a hat and walk fast, because if someone recognized you, they’d shout your character’s name.
On his boyfriend, David Burtka:
I’m just bowled over by him. He’s made my life exponentially more livable. He’s just – great.
I was not a huge fan of Doogie Howser, M.D.; I thought the premise of the show was pretty stupid. But I am definitely a fan of NPH. I really enjoyed this interview.
