Nickelodeon Buys ‘Ninja Turtles’ for $60M, 2012 Movie Release Expected
Nickelodeon has purchased the rights to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for $60 million! The rumored movie should be out in 2012.
Variety reports the deal, which puts all intellectual property rights and all merchandising rights to the characters into the hands of Nickelodeon. The current animated series, produced by Mirage and 4Kids, will air through the end of October.
The new film has been called a Batman Begins-style reboot which would re-tell the origin of the characters. Co-creator Peter Laird has suggested it might even include the two-legged robot ‘mousers’ which appeared in early issues of the black and white comic series. But acasting call announcement earlier this year, which was obviously premature, sought martial artists to appear as the Foot Clan, which suggests that the film will re-tell the Shredder / April / Foot Clan story seen in altered form in the original 1990 live-action movie.
I’m not one of those die-hard fans of the Turtles, but it’s certainly a fond memory from childhood. It’s amazing that these characters can sell for an amount like $60 million, but I guess if Nickelodeon can make a movie that’s good enough they can easily make that money back.

I am totally a die hard TMNT fan, and I’m curious to see what they do with it. An origin story would definitely be interesting.
I really liked the 2k3 version better than the 1987 version. 2k3 was dark, humorous, action, and everything they did (except for season 6&7) basically fit in. I really hope Nick doesn’t screw this show up.
