‘Michael Jackson’s This Is It’ Opens Today: Biggest Concert Film Ever?

alg_michael_jackson_fans

Michael Jackson’s This Is It opens in theaters today, and is likely to be the biggest concert film release ever.

Michael Jackson’s final act “This Is It” opens in theaters around the world Tuesday.

Concert pic begins playing at points across the globe beginning at 9 p.m. PT, when the Los Angeles premiere wraps. Movie rolls out in roughly 3,500 theaters domestically and thousands more overseas. The film is currently slated to run for a little more than two weeks.

How much “This Is It” could generate in ticket sales through its first weekend is diffcult to predict. Some distributors say north of $40 million at the domestic B.O. alone; others say more.

Film is in the top five titles of 2009 in terms of preticket sales on online ticketing service Fandango.

Disney’s concert pic “Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour” opened to $31.1 million at the domestic B.O. on its way to cuming $65.3 million in a limited run.

Overseas, “Best of Both Worlds” grossed $5.4 million internationally for a worldwide haul of $70.6 million.

Most believe “This Is It” will generate substantially more.

I have no doubt in my mind that this film will easily outsell all other concert films ever released, c’mon it’s Michael Jackson. They say it’s only out for two weeks, but I just don’t buy it. They are going to milk this for all it’s worth, and that’s a lot.

Bad News: ‘Short Circuit’ Remake Gets ‘Mall Cop’ Director

short_circuit_3

The director of Paul Blart: Mall Cop Steve Carr has signed on to helm the upcoming remake of the film Short Circuit.

We’ve known that Dimension would remake Short Circuit, and we’ve known that Robot Chicken writer Dan Milano would be scripting. Now we’ve got a director: Steve Carr. Who? How about this: he’s the guy who directed Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

I haven’t seen Paul Blart: Mall Cop. It might be more funny than a lot of people would like to admit. (I doubt it, but trying to be fair here.) But knowing that I have no interest in seeing Paul Blart, I’m looking at Carr’s resume to get an idea of what to expect. Maybe Paul Blart wasn’t really his fault. Let’s see…we’ve got Next Friday to start with. Funny enough, not a bad start. Then…uh-oh. Dr. Doolittle 2Daddy Day Care and the very aptly titled Are We Done Yet? Yikes. I’m glad I had no particular ties to this remake in the first place.

This is one of those movies that on one hand I feel should be left alone. But on the other hand I think it could be pretty interesting. All the modern technology of today integrated into the new version of this film and this character could make for some fresh entertainment. Unfortunately Steve Carr is behind some truly terrible films.

Matt Damon and Josh Brolin Join The Coen’s ‘True Grit’

damonbrolinbridges

Matt Damon and Josh Brolin seem to be joining Jeff Bridges in the upcoming Coen brothers remake True Grit.

Matt Damon and Josh Brolin are in discussions with Joel and Ethan Coen to join Jeff Bridges in “True Grit,” the re-imagining of the iconic 1969 Western that Paramount Pictures will put into production next March for late 2010 release.

The Coens, who previously attached their “Big Lebowski” star Bridges to play U.S. marshal Rooster Cogburn, are in talks with Damon to play the lawman (played by Glen Campbell in the original) who teams with Cogburn and a 14-year old girl to track her father’s killer into hostile Indian territory.

In a turnabout, Brolin is in talks to play the killer. The actor’s recent rise was greatly helped playing the good guy in the Coens’ Oscar-winning contemporary Western “No Country for Old Men.” Jeff Corey played the killer in the original, and Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper also played outlaws.

Sign me up! This sounds like a really great film already, talk about throwing together a massive pile of talent! I’ll be keeping you posted on the happenings with this Oscar bait flick.

‘Last Day of Summer’ Poster Looks Serious

last_day_of_summer

Here’s the poster for the upcoming film, Last Day of Summer. Here’s what it’s about:

This unpredictable story follows an agitated fast-food employee, Joe, who’s reached his breaking point from being harassed and tormented by his boss. Finally on the last day of summer, Joe snaps and decides to take revenge on his boss but his plans are disrupted when a quick glance from a beautiful girl catches his attention leading him to kidnapping her instead, changing both their lives forever.

This actually sounds like it could be pretty good, it could be really interesting to see DJ Qualls playing a more serious role instead of his constant comedic side roles.

50 Productions Come Home to California, Thanks Arnie!

arnold

Arnold Schwarzenegger has helped ensure that 50 movies and TV shows will shoot here in California.

Touting the state’s new production incentives, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger confirmed Monday that 36 film and TV productions are set to shoot in Hollywood’s home state during the current quarter as a direct result of the program.

The governor said Monday 50 projects have been approved for the program to date. The projects have a combined budget of at least $467 million.

“Productions that were slated to film outside the state have shifted gears and are now shooting in California because of our film and television incentive,” Schwarzenegger said in a statement. “This is not only great news for our production workers but for the thousands of small businesses that support film and television production in California and our state’s economy as a whole.”

Other incentive-backed projects slated to begin production this quarter include Screen Gems’ “Burlesque,” Sony’s “Social Network,” DreamWorks’ “Dinner for Schmucks” plus indies “Beginners,” “The Raise,” “Answers to Nothing” and “Max Rose,” starring Jerry Lewis.

The California Film Commission, which administers the program, said 50% of the approved projects are indie features, 22% are studio features, 8% are direct-to-DVD films, 14% are telepics and 6% are TV series. Fourteen projects have already begun lensing, and 22 more will begin shooting before the end of the year while the remainder will begin filming early next year.

This is really great news for the state of California, one of the only great things Schwarzenegger has done. The economy in California and needs this boost in the worst way. This doesn’t mean there won’t still be tons of productions running away to other states and countries, but at least it is keeping hollywood at the top of the food chain.

DiCaprio’s Rep Says He is Not Involved in ‘The Third Man’

leo_dicaprio

Although it was a big story a couple days ago DiCaprio‘s rep says he is not involved in the the upcoming The Third Man remake.

“He isn’t involved with that project,” DiCaprio’s rep tells Hollyscoop exclusively in regards to reports that he’s set to star in The Third Man alongside good pal Tobey Maguire.

The 1949 Carol Reed remake centers on novelist Holly Martins as he arrives in Vienna to discover that the friend that invited him, Harry Lime, has died in a traffic accident. Orson Welles starred in the original.

Would have been a great choice in the role, but hey there are a lot of other great actors out there. Hopefully they get somebody of a higher caliber than Tobey Maguire.

Steve Carell to Star in ‘Missing Links’ Golf Comedy

stevecarellgolf

Steve Carell is being set up to star in a new golf comedy called Missing Links.

The studio has acquired “Missing Links,” a golf comedy based on a novel from ESPN’s Rick Reilly, with Carell loosely attached to star as a golfer angling for a better place to play.

“The Break-Up” scribe Jay Lavender is writing the screenplay. Greg Silverman will oversee for Warners.

Reilly’s 1997 comedic novel tells of the group of bumblers who, after playing for years at a run-down municipal golf course in a working-class Boston neighborhood, concoct a series of schemes that they hope will lead to them teeing off at a nearby elite club.

The WME-repped Carell is next up on the big screen in the romantic-comedy “Date Night” and is also on board for the sequel of “Get Smart.” He has turned overconfident, deluded characters into a specialty both with his Michael Scott role on “The Office” and in development projects like “Brigadier Gerard.”

This sounds like it could be a lot of fun. Carell manages to make a lot of things funnier than they would be otherwise. He’s going to stay busy for a long time to come.

Kate Gosselin Talks About The Future (Video)

Kate Gosselin

Kate Gosselin did the TLC special, You Ask, Kate Answers and she opened up a lot.  It was good to hear some of the answers she had.  I am hopeful for Kate and what the future holds for her….maybe even a movie role?

“I’ve done enough years on TV that I feel like it’s a normal, comfortable, natural place to be,” she said. “I’d love to be in a movie at some point, I’d love to be the voice of a cartoon character in a movie for my kids. I think that would be fun.”

Will Kate get married again?

“To be honest, I don’t know. I really don’t want to be married again, but I don’t want to be alone. The alone-ness is really alone.”

As we all know, Jon Gosselin is full of it when it comes to the kids being harmed by the show,

“They’re not suffering from this,” she said. “The fact that they have these different experiences they need to handle is only going to help them in life.”

I agree.  The kids were born with the video cameras.  They don’t know anything different.  So I am hoping that they are able to keep something going to help them out financially.  At least Kate can do a talk show, keep writing books.  Maybe do a tell-all on the real life with Jon Gosselin.  That would be a best seller!

Khloe Kardashian & Lamar Odom ‘Seal The Deal’ (Photos)

Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom tattoos

Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom have taken their relationship to the next level.  If you are wondering if there is a level past marriage, the answer is yes. The next and final level is ink. Tattoos that is.  These are more permanent than the marriage itself.  Even if you get them lasered off later, you will have the scar.

Khloe and Lamar are seriously in love and they proved it on Saturday night (October 24th) when they hit up Tattoo Mania after dinner.  Khloe is a big fan of tattoos if they have meaning behind them,

“I’m definitely a believer in tattoos as long as they are thoughtful and have significant meaning, which all of mine do. On my wrist I have “I love you” in my father’s handwriting and on my lower back I have a cross and angel wings with “Daddy” written above it in honor of my father and now I have my husband’s initials “LO”. Tattoos are something you’ll have for the rest of your life so it’s important to get one that truly means something to you.”

So it’s a done deal.  Lamar got K.O. both of his hands and Khloe got L.O. on her right hand.  Congrats on making it to the final level lovebirds!

What do you think?  Are tattoos taking it too far too fast or this totally romantic?

Ashlee Simpson & Pete Wentz Selling Home

Ashlee Simpson Pete Wentz Wet Republic

Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz are starting to realize that their Beverly Hills dream mansion may not be a safe play area for their son Bronx.

The house is built into the side of a giant hill and it doesn’t really have any yard. Now that Bronx is getting older they realized that really isn’t a child-friendly house.

“They are going to sell this house and look for something that will be better suited to young children.”

In case you were in the market for a previously owned Beverly Hills mansion this one sounds quite nice. The home is 5,896-square-feet, has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a media room, gourmet kitchen and of course a gym. There’s also a guest house in case the in-laws drop by!

The Wentz’s originally paid $4.5 million in 2007, but in this market, I’m sure you can get it for a steal.
