Board Game ‘Risk’ Becoming a Movie
Sony is bringing a movie based on the board game Risk to the big screen.
Sony Pictures is taking on some Risk, having acquired the film rights to the classic board game, in which players vie for world domination, from Hasbro.
The film will be produced and developed by Hasbro president and CEO Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir and Overbrook Entertainment’s James Lassiter.
The game was invented in 1957 by French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse under the title La Conquete du Monde (The Conquest of the World). Two years later, Parker Brothers published the game in the U.S. as Risk. According to Hasbro, Risk was the first board game to offer nonlinear movement as players compete on a map of the world by amassing armies and conquering territory.
The studios are clearly desperate to get projects off the ground that can piggy-back off of the success of famous non-movie products and games. Given the goal of the game (world domination), I can’t imagine what kind of personal story they can pull from this concept. I think it will be more of a stand alone script with the Risk name and logo attached. I’m not expecting much here.
