2010 Winter Olympic Games – Georgian Luger Dies – GRAPHIC Video

2010 Olympic Winter Games - Georgian Luge DEATH VIDEO

The 2010 Olympic Games started off with heartbreak after a freak accident occurred during a practice run on the luge track.

Nodar Kumaritashvili, 21, from the Republic of Georgia was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after losing control of his sled during a training run at nearly 90 mph on the bobsled/luge track in Whistler, 70 miles north of Vancouver. His body flew out of the banked run and struck an unpadded steel roof support.

The team of just eight was reduced to seven.  The somber team still walked into the Opening Ceremonies just hours after the death of their friend.  It was very moving to see the crowd rise to their feet and honor the lost Georgian teammate.

ACCIDENTS HAPPENED AT A TIME WE DONT EXPECT.BUT WE CANNOT DENY A FACT THAT ACCIDENTS CAN BE AVOIDED. THE LUGE
INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE HAVE TO DOUBLE CHECK THE TRACT AND MUST CONSIDER SERIOUSLY THE SAFETY OF THE ATHLETE.
