When American Idol Fantasia Barrino was hospitalized for a “medication overdose” earlier this month it led many to speculate that she had overdosed herself deliberately. She did, in fact, try to commit suicide – and on Tuesday she told Gayle King why.
Fantasia says she was deeply depressed, and that her depression was not just about the drama over her relationship with Antwaun Cook. It went all the way back to her days on American Idol in 2004.
“When I was on Idol … they weren’t really looking at my gift. [Producers] were focusing on all the bad things I had done before I made it there. I have feelings, you know. I’m human.”
Then came a whole string of unhappiness, including a throat tumor in 2008, a home foreclosure, “business trouble” and one too many critics opining on her autobiography and the movie based on it:
“[After] putting out my Lifetime movie and my book [Life Is Not a Fairy Tale], [people] picked certain things in the book, [saying], ‘She’s illiterate, she’s dumb.’ [And] I had to sit and hear comedians crack their jokes, and certain people say what they had to say.”
Sounds like it was all just too much… some of it surely preventable (affair) and some of it just tragic (tumor). Very sad. Depression is no joke. But, it sounds like Fantasia is on the mend now so hopefully she gets herself some good help and can move forward in a much more healthy way.
